The Pernambuco coast has 187 kilometres (116 mi) long[1] plus the Fernando de Noronha islands coast.In Pernambuco are located dozens of beaches of all types, from virgin to urban ones. Below, list of Pernambuco beaches by municipality, from the northernmost Carne de Vaca beach until Coroa Grande at the south end.

Goiana beaches

  • Carne de Vaca beach

Which means in English beef meat is the first beach from the North coast of Pernambuco. Has a narrow sand strip, small waves and, when at low tides banks of sand before the natural reefs . It is located in a small village with few homes and a vast area of coconut trees. To the North, is the mouth of the Goiana River and to the South, is the small Doce river.

  • Pontas de Pedras beach

Has weak waves, fine sand and lots of algae on the water. Is located in the urban core of the village, where several fishermen boats are always anchored.

  • Barra de Catuama beach

This beach still retains some of native atlantic forest vegetation.

  • Catuama beach

Has clear water, reefs and wet sand. At low tide, there are sand banks, stones and natural pools. It is located close to the village center, where is a church in devotion to Nossa Senhora da Penha - Our Lady of Penha.

  • Atapuz beach

Fishermen village, close to the intersection between Itapessoca River and Santa Cruz channel. In town, there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian.

  • Tabatinga beach

Has palm trees, mangrove and holidays summer houses. It is located on a private property farm. To access this beach, just between Carne de Vaca and Pontas de pedras beach.

Itamaracá Islands beaches

  • Pontal da Ilha beach

Has calm waters, mangue vegetation, good for swimming. It is located in the intersection between Catuama River and Santa Cruz channel.

  • Fortinho beach

Has weak waves, large rocks, and not depth waters.

  • Pontal de Jaguaribe beach

Considered dangerous because of the estuary of Jaguaribe River. Also, shows area of advanced coastal erosion and is not a popular destination.

Ilha de Itamaracá estuary

Located in the urban area of the municipality, is two kilometres long and has several bars and restaurants. Each year held a fishing festival of garfishes. Its major attraction is the Lady Lia, which is the most well-known singer of Ciranda. Ciranda is a folklore musical style. It is a very popular beach.

  • Quatro cantos beach

Which means four cornes beach. Urban beach and when at high tides, just have small sand strip.

  • Pilar beach

Urban beach with a small strip of land when at high tide. There is the cross of Our Lady of Pilar.

  • Rio Âmbar beach

Has quiet waters and fine sands. Also has the Itamaraca Yacht club and numerous summer houses. It is a popular destination.

  • Baixa Verde beach

Which means lower green, has clear sand, coconut trees vegetation, and summer and fishermen's houses.

  • Forno de Cal beach

Area of occurrence of coastal erosion, now has containment dykes.

  • Forte Orange beach

Fort Orange in English, has its name due to the presence of a Dutch fort built in 1631 and re-built by Portugueses in 1654. It's the site/point where boats and rafts cross the Jaguaribe River to the Coroa do Avião beach islet. Also, has an Ibama centre of sea mammals (Trichechus manatus) for their lives preservation and studies. With its calm waters and many bars, the beach, it is a very popular destination.

  • Enseada dos Golfinhos beach
Estuary

Which means Dolphins bay. Has mangal vegetation and some sands banks. Good for swimming. Unlike what the name suggests does not have dolphins in this area. In Pernambuco, just Fernando de Noronha has dolphins.

  • São Paulo beach

Has extensive sand banks, reefs and tide pools.

  • Sossego beach

Which means quiet beach. Has mangrove vegetation, sand banks and natural pools. The Jaguaribe River estuary complete the landscape.

Igarassu beaches

  • Gavoa beach

Considered excellent for water sports, has not depth water and is located at 13 km East from the city center. Together with Forte Orange beach, are the only places available to reach Coroa do Avião Islet beach. It is a very popular destination.

  • Coroa do Avião Islet beach

Famous sandbar islet, in the middle of the Jaguaribe River delta, which can be reached only by boat or raft, from Itamaracá or Gavoa beach. Its name means, Airplane crown. The islet has many luxurious summer houses. Due to its beauty, it is considered a hotspot.

  • Mangue seco beach

Also known as Captain's beach, is about 1500 metres long and, when at low tide, the waves retreat approximately 500 metres. Its name means dry mangal.

Paulista beaches

  • Conceição beach

In his two kilometres long with many coconut trees, has calm and very deep water. It has many bars and tents.

  • Pau Amarelo beach

Has quiet water and formation of sand banks, which give rise to small sandbar islets and natural pools. Has many bars, tents and pousadas - traditional bed & breakfast, especially where is located the Pau Amarelo Fort, built in 1719. It is a very popular destination.

  • Janga beach

Urban beach with artificial reefs to protect the shore, polluted in several stretches.

  • Maria Farinha beach

Has quiet and shallow waters. At low tide, it is possible to see the reefs and the beach almost does not have waves. Host one very popular and large water park - the Veneza water park. Also, is a good place to do hang gliding walks. Has very good touristic infrastructure, with many bars, restaurants, hotels and pousadas. It's the most famous Paulista beach.

Olinda beaches

  • Rio Doce beach

Urban beach, with numerous bars and restaurants. It is an area of coastal erosion, though, its name means sweet river.

  • Casa Caiada beach

Urban beach, with stone protection (dikes) to refrain the ocean advance. At low tide, the waves almost disappear.

  • Bairro Novo beach

Located in the hononymous neighborhood of Olinda means new neighborhood. Today, it is currently divided into several mini-beaches, due to the construction of artificial reefs to contain the advance of the sea. The swimmer must be careful because there is rapid change in depth.

  • Farol beach

In the urban area, polluted and less frequented.

  • Carmo beach

Urban, almost without waves, due to the artificial breakwater. Site of arrival of fishing boats, it is less frequented due to the pollution.

  • Milagres beach

Milagres means Miracles in Portuguese. It is an urban beach with strong waves. Has polluted stretch near the Maruin Islet, close to the Beberibe River.

  • Del Chifre beach

In the outskirts of Olinda. It is a beach located at an isthmus between the Beberibe River and the sea. This beach is polluted and offer potential risk of shark attack.

It is an urban beach, less frequented due to the proximity of the Recife port.

  • Pina beach

Located in one neighborhood of Recife with the some name, it is an urban beach with weak waves. Well developed and frequented due to its proximity with Boa viagem beach.

Boa Viagem is a neighbourhood in the city of Recife, Pernambuco located in the privileged southern zone of the town. The neighbourhood has one of the most visited beaches in Brazil, Boa Viagem beach. If you are in Recife and looking for a very good beach but don't want to take a long journey to get there, Boa Viagem is the best choice. Located in the privileged southern Recife metropolitan area, Boa Viagem is the most important and frequented beach in town. It is protected by a long reef wall and has an extensive coastline of seven kilometres, where is possible to practise almost all sports.

Has a very well developed touristic infrastructure with many of the best hotels, restaurants and bars of the city. Also has one international Airport and one of the biggest shopping centers in Brazil and South America - Shopping center Recife. Pina from Recife, Piedade and Candeias from Jaboatao are the closed beaches who directly benefits from the proximity of Boa Viagem beach, totalling 16 kilometres of high quality life.

  • Piedade beach

Urban beach with strong waves, has 4.5 km long. Adjacent to Boa viagem beach, has a very well developed infrastructure with many bars, restaurants, luxury hotels as another equipment.

  • Candeias beach

Urban beach, well developed but occasionally a bit polluted.

  • Barra de Jangada beach

Urban beach, with some traditional infrastructure.

Cabo de Santo Agostinho beaches

  • Paiva beach

Much sought for the practice of surf, has warm and transparent water, vegetation of Atlantic forest and coconut trees, and small natural pools formed between the rocks. Does not provide any visitors service.

  • Itapuama beach

With two kilometres long, is a hot site for water sports and fishing. Has hotels, bars and restaurants.

  • Xeréu beach

Due to the depth of the water, this beach is suitable for diving and also for fishing. In the sand, has volcanic rocks and the bather has access to tents where is served appetizers and fish meals.

  • Enseada dos Corais beach

Means coral bay, it has natural reefs and weak waves. The services are just a few bars and restaurants.

  • Gaibu beach

High waves and wide range of sands in its 3 kilometers length. Good for swimming but, it requires attention because of the existence of deep areas. At high tides is good for surfing. It has very good infrastructure, with several hotels, hostels, bars, restaurants, etc. Together, with Porto de Galinhas and Itamaracá beaches are part of the most exciting beaches in the Northeast coast of Brazil.

  • Calhetas

Much sought for diving, is stuck between rocks and coconut trees. It has bars and restaurants and, is one of the hot spots of the state for underwater fishing.

  • Paraiso beach

Which means Heaven, it is a tiny beach (little heaven) about 30 meters long and stuck between large rocks. The reefs make the sea almost without waves and that is the reason of the name.

  • Suape beach

Virtually without waves and little deep sea, is considered excellent for water sports. At low tide, there are sand banks. It is located in the Suape region close to the industrial and port complex of Suape.

  • Camboa beach

Although deserted, this beach has in its 800 metre length, quiet and little deep waters, natural pools, coconut trees and mangal vegetation. The access is difficult due to the estuary of Merepe River, just by dune buggy, bike or walk from Cupé beach.

  • Muro Alto beach

As Camboa is difficult to access. Has a wall of natural reefs about two km long, which formed a huge natural pool without waves. Its name means High wall due to the presence of the high reefs, is very good for canoeing and kayaking. Has hotels and Pousadas (Bed & Breakfast).

  • Cupé beach

Beach with 4.5 kilometers long involved in coconut trees, has numerous summer's houses, luxurious hotels, pousadas, hostels, bars and restaurants. Has one part of its coast protected by natural reefs, with the formation of natural pools. In the other part, where does not have reefs, the sea is choppy with strong waves, which requires care by the bathers.

It's famous for being one of the most beautiful beaches of the Brazilian coast, due to its landscape. It is 6.5 km long with warm clear water pools scattered around its coral reefs, almost no waves, estuaries, mangroves, coconut trees and a number of other samples of abundant nature richness make Porto de Galinhas the most exciting beach in Pernambuco. Also, has dozens of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, luxurious hotels, pousadas, stores, teachers of diving and summer houses for rent. Also, is very good for canoeing and kayaking.It has been elected as the best Brazilian beach in Brazil by the eighth time in a row by the readers of Travel & Tourism magazine.[2] How to get there: can be reached through Highways BR-101 Sul, PE-060, PE-038 and PE-09.

  • Pontal de Maracaípe beach

It is a fluvial - marine beach at the estuary of the Maracaípe River. The predominant vegetation is mangue. The beach is often used for water sports as canoeing and boat trips. Also, it is possible to find services to rent kayaks, banana boats and buggies.

  • Maracaípe beach

It is considered a paradise for surfers, has deep waters and huge waves. Maracaípe hosts a phase of the Brazilian Surf Tournament and one phase of the international surf calendar. Coconut trees, fine sand and a rich mangal vegetation completes the landscape. It is highly frequented by surfers and is a very popular destination.

  • Serrambi beach

This is the most sought state beach for scuba diving due to the presence in its waters of remnants of several shipwrecks. The vessels are from different historical periods: since the Colonial Brazil (500 years ago) until the major world wars. It has reasonable service of restaurant and bars.

Sirinhaém beaches

  • Gamela beach

Beach of clear water, reefs and extensive areas of coconut trees. It has some bars and Palhoças (tents) offering typical food of the region (based in fish and seafood).

  • Guadalupe beach

Still almost virgin, it is 3 kilometres long and part of the Gold Coast Project, created to develop in a planned and environmentally way the potential of one extensive coast area since Cabo de Santo Agostinho until Maragogi in Alagoas.

  • Barra de Sirinhaém beach

Fluvial - marine beach, is largely used to practice water sports. With six kilometres long, has several sections where bathing is not recommended, due to the violence of the waves.

Rio Formoso beaches

  • Pedra beach and Reduto beach

There are the only two beaches of the municipality. The major attraction is the estuary of the Formoso River. Has an extensive area of coconut trees, sand banks and natural reefs.

  • Boca da Barra beach

At low tide is formed natural pools. Good for swimming, has a dense mangrove vegetation in the estuary of Canoa quebrada River. It is possible by walking, to reach the Mamocambilhas beach in Barreiros.

  • Campas beach

With its 3 kilometres long, is good for swimming, and in front of the Marinas hotel, the sea allows natural anchorages of boats. Has a good touristic infrastructure, where is possible to rent equipment such as jetski, banana boats and boats.

  • Tamandaré beach

Urbanized, with its two kilometres expanse of sand and a good number of touristics facilities. Has small waves and fine sand, considered by many as the best beach for bathing and swimming in Pernambuco. Easy to reach from Recife and Caruaru, is one of the shelters for those who want to get rid of the large urban centers life style.

  • Carneiros beach

Still almost deserted, just has a few summer houses and bars. It has five kilometres of beautiful landscape mixed between the reefs, coconut trees and low waves water.

Barreiros beaches

  • Porto beach

Perfect for those who loved wild beauty. It is surrounded by 3 large rocks, and the beach is practically deserted. It is the most difficult beach to reach in all state and one of the most beautiful. To get at this beach, the visitors just have two ways: by buggy from Barreiros town centre ( 7 km ); the other way, in a walk from the nearby beach of Varzéa do Una (5 km). Will be installed in this beach a large resort complex called The Reef Club, with four thousands flats by the end of 2009.

  • Mamucabinhas beach

It has dense coconut trees area, stretch of mangal and a rocks path to get there. Beach less frequented, ideal for those seeking tranquility.

  • Gravatá beach

Located in one region considered one of the best in the northeast coast to the practice of underwater fishing. Although still primitive, has vast area of coconut trees, mangrove vegetation and weak waves.

  • Barra da Cruz beach

As Gravatá beach and Várzea do Una, is located in an excellent area for hunting underwater.

  • Várzea do Una beach

Bay with strong waves, large strip of sand. Also is very good for fishing underwater and is located in the estuary of Una river.

  • Coroa Grande beach

Which means great crown, is located in the urban coast of the city. Has weak waves and sand banks up to the natural reefs, about 600 yards from the beach.

Fernando de Noronha Islands beaches

Fernando de Noronha is an isolated group of 21 volcanic islands approximately 545 km from Recife. The main islands are the visible parts of a range of submerged mountains, islets and rocks. The Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha hosts ecological sites ideal for exuberant marine animal life, due to its geographic location far from the continent and well within the path of the Southern Equatorial Currents, as well as the nature of its climate. How to get there: by plane or cruise from Recife or by plane from Natal. An small environmental preservation fee is charged from tourists upon arrival, by Ibama.   • Sancho beach

One of the main points for diving in Fernando de Noronha, the beach is surrounded by a natural wall which serves as a shelter for some species of seabirds. The locals, called as Sancho bay or beach.

  • Conceição beach

One of the best frequented in the islands. Offers good waves, beautiful landscape and has some bars.

  • Cacimba do Padre beach

One of the most famous of the islands, has two adjacents beaches (Americano and Bode beaches). This beach is ideal to practise surfing due to its strong waves. It is part of the International and National calendar of surf every year. Also, from there is possible to see the famous Noronha postcard - Morro Dois Irmãos or two brothers rocks.

  • Golfinhos bay

Which means dolphins bay. It is a bay located behind Sancho beach, and it is an area of preservation by Ibama, banned for swimming and for access by boats, serves as shelter for spinner dolphins or golfinhos rotadores. Just one trail leads to the top of a natural wall where is possible to see the spinner dolphins.

  • Porcos bay

Or Pigs bay in English, is one of the main highlights of Fernando de Noronha. The bay is in front of two brothers rocks and has some natural pools formed between the rocks and reefs.

  • Santo Antonio Port bay

It is located adjacent to the main port of the archipelago. Local for loading and unloading vessels with goods supplies to the islands. Also, it's the starting point for the local tours and cruises to Recife. Has a small beach with calm water and a very beautiful sunset.

  • Boldró beach

This beach has waters dominated by coral formation. Are ideal for scuba diving but dangerous, due to the violence of the water.
