Perforated metal
Perforated metal (also known as perforated sheet, stamping plates, or perforated screen) is made through the metal stamping and sheet metal manufacturing process. Sheet metal materials include steel, aluminium, stainless steel, bronze, brass, titanium, and so on.
Perforated materials are very versatile. From lightweight decorative elements to load-bearing structural components, perforated metal offers unique opportunities to combine strength, functionality and beauty.
Perforated metal is also an excellent means of achieving sustainable design objectives. Perforated sunshades and sunscreens provide privacy for building occupants without blocking the view. And they offer a comfortable level of natural lighting during daylight hours while deflecting heat to reduce the load on the HVAC system. Perforated canopies, façades and cladding can also be used to help control interior climate and save energy.
Technical terms
Staggered Pattern: Holes are aligned in staggered or nested orientation. A staggered perforation pattern can provide the highest open area.
Straight Pattern: Perforated holes are aligned in straight rows and columns.
Unfinished Ends: The end perforation pattern is not solid and appears rough and incomplete at the end of the sheet.
Margins: Area on the side, ends, or inside the perforated sheet without perforations
Safe Side Margins: This type of margin is achieved by perforating the material all the way up to the edge but not on or over the edge
Perforated Tool/Tooling: Interchangeable die sets: pins/punches, die plate, stripper plate, and punch holder used on the perforating presses to perforate the various perforation patterns
Hole Size: Diameter measurement of the perforation shape; measurement from side to side
Finished Ends: The end perforation pattern is solid and appears uniform or complete at the end of the sheet

Acoustic performance helps people or workers to limit health effects from noise. Studies[3] have shown that perforated metals help reduce sound levels.
Studies[4] show that having buildings use perforated metal sheets in front of their façade can bring in one study 29% energy savings (HVAC + Lighting estimated consumption in 1 year) and in the second one 45% energy savings ( heating, ventilation, air conditioning). Depending on the location of the building (intensity of the external sun), solar irradiation can be decrease by 77.9%
Perforated metal needs very limited maintenance and cleaning.[5] This comes with a financial benefit (not having to pay a cleaning service) as long with an environment benefit of not using detergents, energy or water (drinking water from the main) for cleaning.
Perforated metal is long lasting and does not need to be replaced for years. This saves on financial costs. This enables not having to annoy occupiers of the building with work related annoyance like noise or dust. This comes with a big environmental benefit of not creating a new material sheet and its related C02 costs.
Perforated metal can be used in every location, you just need to choose the right alloy for the stainless steel [6]
so that it resists to seaside atmosphere or city car polluted atmosphere.[7]
Perforated metal sheets are light which is very advantageous for the building structure when they are installed on the building.
Punching is the way most perforated sheets are created.[8] The metal removed from the sheets are recuperated and recycled to be reused for creating new sheets. Sheets of expanded metal are made in a way that does not remove any metal from the sheet.
The flexibility in the design provides room for creative architectural ideas.[9][10]
