Penang have won four Malaysia Cup, three Malaysia Super League, five Malaysia FAM League, one Malaysia FA Cup and one Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup. Having won 14 titles, Penang is the fourth most successful team in Malaysia.

The Bandaraya has been the home stadium of Penang since its inception. Previously, they played at the Negeri Pulau Pinang Stadium in Batu Kawan. Penang shares a rivalry with Perak and Kedah.

History

As early as 1890, a team from Penang crossed the Straits to play against a team from Medan a cricket match (in the morning, Penang won) and a football game (in the afternoon, drawn). Another visit is reported for February 1893, with the Penang visitors winning two football matches 7-0 and 4-2. Penang competed in the inaugural season of Malaya Cup in 1921.

Penang reached its first Malaya Cup Final in 1934, losing 2–1 to Singapore. Penang gained their first honours by winning the FAM league title in 1952. They reached the finals on three different occasion before winning their first Malaya Cup in 1953. They won their second Malaya Cup one year later. In 1955, Penang won three FAM league titles. They won their third Malaya Cup in 1958.

In 1974, Penang won the Malaysia Cup, beating Perak 2–1. Penang won their first league title in 1982. In 1992, Penang were promoted to Premier 1. They won their second league title in 1998. Two seasons later, in 2001, Penang won the league title for the third time. Penang won its first FA Cup in 2002. A year later, they won the Charity Shield after beating Selangor.

Penang were co-founders of the Malaysia Super League upon its creation in 2004, but they endured seven seasons of struggle before being relegated in 2011. After one season in Malaysia Premier League, Penang fell to the lowest point in their history, becoming the first ever Malaysia Cup winners to be relegated to the country's third league tier.

The club board appointed former player Merzagua Abderrazak to guide Penang for the 2013 season. The Moroccan made quick improvements to the team. In his first season, Penang won 17 out of 20 league matches and qualified to the second round of FA Cup. On 27 May 2013, it was confirmed Penang gained promotion to the Premier League after a 1-0 win against Perak YBU. On Sunday 2 June 2013, the club won the 2013 Malaysia FAM League title after defeating Shahzan Muda 1-0. Merzagua left at the end of the season.

Merzagua's departure was followed by the arrival of Malaysian coach K. Devan.

Shirt

The team used blue shirts for most of its history; however, in recent years, several different colours have been used.

The City Stadium is the home stadium of Penang FA. The stadium is the oldest built stadium still in use in Malaysia. Opened in 1956, it was built by the British government in 1948.
