Payal Rohatgi (born 9 November 1984) is an Indian actress and model who appears in Bollywood films.[1]
Early life
Rohatgi was born in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, India on November 9, 1984 Hyderabad. She is the daughter of Veena Rohatgi and Shashank Rohatgi. She has a brother named Gaurav Rohatgi. She was brought up in a middle-class family and grew up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. She completed her schooling from Udgam School and did her engineering from L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad. She is a computer engineer by education.[2]
Career
Modeling
Rohatgi started her career by modeling for popular brands like Amul, Nirma, and Nescafe. She gained attention after appearing in a television ad for Cadbury's Temptations Chocolates. Around this time she also appeared in music videos by rock band, Silk Route and Indipop artist, KK.[2]
In 2002, she participated in the Femina Miss India contest. The same year, she won the Miss Tourism World in Medellin, South America.[2] After starting her career in Bollywood, Rohatgi has cut back on the number of advertisements she works in. However, she appeared along with cricketer Virender Sehwag in an ad film for Dabur's Lal Dantmanjan. The film was directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She was also seen in an ad film for Eveready battery in 2006 with Amitabh Bachchan, which was directed by Pradeep Sarkar.
Film career
Rohatgi made her Bollywood debut in 2002 with Harry Baweja's Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?, a Hindi remake of the Hollywood teen flick American Pie.[2] She appeared in the films, Plan (2003), Police Force (2003) and Rakht (2004).
In 2006, she got her breakthrough with the film 36 China Town, also starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal.[3] Later that year, she appeared in Corporate, in which she played the part of an item girl.
In 2007, her first release was Priyadarshan's Dhol In 2008, she was seen in a cameo opposite Ranvir Shorey in PNC film Ugly Aur Pagli which was released in August. In mid-September, she appeared opposite Irrfan Khan in the TV18 film Dil Kabaddi.[4] She played the role of an aerobics instructor in the film. She has been doing theater workshops and has debuted on stage in Vandana Sajnani Khattar's English play Four Play on October 16, 2010 in Mumbai.[citation needed]
In 2012, her latest film Valentine's Night, also starring off-screen boyfriend Sangram Singh, an international wrestler was released. In 2013, she has started shooting for a Hindi film "Black Currency" to be directed by Sanjay Sharma and produced by Shantineketan films.. Here Ms Rohatgi is paired opposite acclaimed actor Nawazzudin Siddiqui ..
Television

In August 2008, Rohatgi appeared in season 2 of the reality television show, Bigg Boss on Colors TV as a contestant.[5] She was involved in a lot of controversies relating to Rahul Mahajan, whom she dismissed as a seven-year old friend.
In 2009, Rohatgi performed a comedy skit as a celebrity performer in Comedy Circus - Chinchpokli to China on Sony Television.[2]
On 11 January 2010, she appeared in the Ndtv Imagine show Raaz Pichle Janam Ka.[6]
In February 2011, she was seen as a contestant on Imagine TV's show Zor Ka Jhatka hosted by Shahrukh Khan.
In mid-2011, Rohatgi featured in Sony TV's acclaimed series, CID, in the episode "Dhoom - Bike Robbers." Her cameo earned her widespread appreciation and gave her much scope.
In 2012, she was seen as a contestant in Star plus's show "Survivor India" which is No. 1 reality show in 70 countries worldwide. She ended up 5th runner-up on the show.
In February 2013, Rohatgi was seen as a contestant in Life ok's show "Welcome-Baazi Mehmaan Nawazi Ki" in which she won her cluster of episodes..This is the first time Ms Rohatgi won any reality show series and is very happy that her co contestants loved her Mehmanaan Nawazi in the show..
September 2013 will see Ms Payal Rohatgi in Life OK's TV fiction show Hum Ne Li Hai Shapath where she plays the supervillain Gong in the special episodal comic series.[7]
Personal life
In 2008, during the second season of the show, Bigg Boss, Rohatgi was romantically linked with fellow inmate, Rahul Mahajan,[8] immediately after he divorced Shweta Singh.[9] The couple broke up later, with Rohatgi citing abuse and physical assault as the main reasons of their split.[10] Reports have also surfaced of her dating South African cricketer, Herschelle Gibbs in 2010.[11] Since 2011 Ms Rohatgi has been in a committed relationship with Gold medal Indian Wrestler Sangram Singh whom she met on the sets of reality show Survivor India.[12][13]
Social work
Rohatgi is actively associated with the cause of rehabilitation of drugs addicts and alcoholics and celebrated World Anti Drugs Day with them.[2] She is also actively working for an NGO Jeevan Dhara in Mumbai.[2] She recently walked the ramp as Showstopper for Indore Fashion week which was closely working with Save the Girl Child.
She has been appointed Brand Ambassador of International Human Rights Organization IHRO along with boyfriend Sangram recently and she is taking the role very seriously.
Awards
On 2 May 2010, Rohatgi received her first award for excellence in the field of arts by the International Creative Arts Society (ICAS) in Ahmadabad.[citation needed]
In 2012, Miss Rohatgi received Shivmudra Chatrapati award for her contribution in the field of Bollywood.
