Patrame is a small, rural panchayat village[1] on the left (east) bank of the Netravati River in Karnataka, India.[2] Administratively, it is under Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka.[3] Patrame is the only village in its gram panchayat.[3] The village of Patrame is 38 km by road southeast of the taluka headquarters in the town of Belthangady, and 34 km by road west of the Bailhalli Railway Station, which is near the Gundya crossroads.

Demographics

In the 2001 India census, Patrame had 2,178 inhabitants, with 1,085 males (49.8%) and 1,093 females (50.2%), for a gender ratio of 1007 females per thousand males.[4]

In the 2011 census, the village of Patrame had 2,428 inhabitants recorded.[5]

Revenue

The main source of income to the people living here is agriculture. Arecanut being the main crop is grown in most farms with scattered plantations of coconut, paddy, pepper, banana, vanilla, etc.

Transportation

Buses to the village ply from Dharmasthala and Uppinangady at regular intervals. Large number of jeeps connect the village to the nearby town Kokkada though the timings are irregular. Auto rickshaws can also be hired to the village from Jodumaarga at Kokkada (Kokkada Cross).

Network coverage Problems and demands

  • As the village does not have a cell phone tower (of any network provider), the villagers are finding it difficult to connect efficiently to the outer world in this era of information technology. Often feeling deprived of some of their basic rights because of this. In the era of 4G neither do villagers have adequate land phone connectivity nor broadband facility. The officials at the taluk telephone exchange cite the inadequacy of telephone wires for new connection since ages. The only means of communication with the outer world is the BSNL tarang ‘WLL’ phone which only works at it’s ‘WILL’. Even with an external antenna the signal strength is very low and the internet speed is about 3-4kbps, by which browsing even the low bandwidth sites is hardly possible.

Installing a cell phone tower could be a solution to all the above mentioned problems and would be advantageous/profitable for BSNL as well, as there are no other mobile operators in the village. But even after several requests and complaints to the concerned authorities no action has been taken in this regard. The villagers have also started an online campaign on change.org to get a cell-phone tower installed in the village as the officials turn a blind eye.
