Pather is a small suburb of Wishaw, Scotland and was initially built as a council estate. It is situated around ½ miles (0.8 km) from the town centre of the town. Pather can be entered from Caledonian Road through either Lomond Drive or Tarbert Avenue.

Street names

All the streets in Pather are named after Scottish Lochs except Hospital Road, which is an offshoot of the road that used to pass the now demolished Wishaw Hospital.[1] Examples of this include Tarbert Avenue, Lomond Drive, Ness Street, Etive Street and Sunart Street.

Education

There is a non-denominational primary school within the housing estate, called Thornlie Primary.[2] The majority of the children from the area attend this school or the Roman Catholic Primary School, Saint Thomas' Primary which is a five-minute walk from the scheme.[3]

Shops, services and facilities

Pather has a post office, two small shops, and a hairdresser. There is also a shop on the outskirts of the scheme which the locally referred to as "Chokkar's" after its previous owner, however, the shop has been under new management for several years. The shops in the scheme are locally known as "Top Shop" and "Middle Shop" in regards to their location in the scheme. There is also a small of arcade of shops across Caledonian road near the Lomond Drive entrance to Pather. The shop there is locally known as "Kenny's", also named after a previous owner. The arcade has contained other businesses in the past such as a cafe and furniture store.

The area between Pather and Gowkthrapple used to be taken up by Piano farm, but unfortunately the farm is no longer there; instead, there are empty fields.

From Pather, it is only a 5-minute walk into the town centre and main shopping area of Wishaw. A fifteen-minute walk will take you from Pather along piano roads (locally called the "Auld Roads") to Overtown or Gowkthrapple. Pather is also only a few minutes away from Wishaw Sports Centre.

A large park area, complete with football goals and children's playparks, stretches from Caledonian Road to the "Old Roads" - the complete length of the estate. There is also a BMX bike park at the top end of the scheme.

Transport

Pather is separated from the main part of Wishaw and Gowkthrapple by the two railway lines, one of which is the main West Coast line between Glasgow and London and the other is the Lanark line which runs between Lanark and Milngavie and Dalmuir, which run parallel along the length of the scheme proper. It is also serviced by First Glasgow buses which run a service to Glasgow. Pather can be entered by Tarbert or Lomond Drive by Caledonian Road (B754).

Religion

Pather has a Roman Catholic Chapel situated at the entrance to the Scheme on Tarbert Avenue,[4] however, the Scheme has many religions based within it.
