Pat Audinwood is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the lightweight division. Audinwood has been a professional MMA competitor since 2007, competing mostly in the north-east circuit in the U.S.

Mixed martial arts career

Background

Audinwood's began wrestling at high school where his cousin, World Extreme Cagefighting veteran, John Franchi was his coach. It was Franchi who encouraged Audinwood to give up on modeling with Abercrombie and Fitch to pursue a career in MMA. Audinwood began training with his cousin at Team Bombsquad, the same team that produced UFC light heavyweight star Jon Jones.[1]

Audinwood's nickname was coined by his cousin in a discussion with a ring announcer at one of Audinwood's fights. Audinwood was answering no to a question about having a nickname when his cousin interrupted: "Yeah," said Franchi, "his nickname is Awesome ... Awesomely Awesome".[1]

Early career

Audinwood competed in his first MMA fight in 2007 after meeting with Tamdan McCrory's manager at a celebratory bar party for McCrory. After a couple of practices, Audinwood was signed to fight at a small show in Massachusetts, a fight he won via second round triangle choke.[2] Fighting for the same promotion around two months later, Audinwood claimed a unanimous decision victory.[3]

After a further two victories, Audinwood competed for his first MMA title in the Battle Cage Xtreme (BCX) 4 event. Fighting against Lester Caslow, Audinwood was victorious with a unanimous decision thus becoming the BCX Lightweight Champion.[1] His next match was a title defense against Andrew Montanez, which ended in the only draw of Audinwood's career to date. Just two months later, however, Audinwood gained a measure of revenge at the Raging Wolf Rumble in the Rez event, defeating Montanez via majority decision.[3]

Audinwood's highest exposure matchup took place in April 2010, when he competed for the M-1 Global organisation, in the "Americas Round 1" event. His opponent was Robert Conner, who narrowly failed to make weight.[4] Audinwood would go on to win via unanimous decision,[5] a victory that brought him offers of contracts with both M-1 Global and the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC).[1]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In July 2010, Audinwood signed with the UFC. His debut opponent was scheduled to be Aaron Riley at UFC 119,[6] but Riley withdrew due to a back injury[1] and was replaced by Thiago Tavares.[7] Audinwood described the fight as a "real test",[1] considering that Tavares has previously defeated world-ranked fighters Manny Gamburyan and Michihiro Omigawa. Tavares also holds black belts in jiu-jitsu and judo.[1] The bout took place on September 25, 2010, in Indianapolis.[7] Tavares defeated Audinwood in the first round by guillotine choke.

Audinwood then faced UFC newcomer John Makdessi on December 11, 2010 at UFC 124.[8] He lost the fight via unanimous decision and was subsequently released from the promotion.
