Parvathamma Rajkumar (born 6 December, 1939) is an influential and leading Kannada film producer, distributor, and exhibitor from almost four decades. She is one of the most successful female film-entrepreneur from Karnataka, who built the empire initially on popularity of her husband Late. Dr. Rajkumar, an icon of Kannada cinema, and later on her own calibre[managerial skills] produced blockbluster films with Rajkumar and introduced her sons[heroes] - Shiv Rajkumar; Puneeth Rajkumar; and Raghavendra Rajkumar -, and many heroines - Malashri; Prema; Rakshita; Sudha Rani; and others -, into Kannada film industry.[1][2][3]

She is honoured with numerous awards, notably, Phalke Academy award, Kannada Rajyotsava, Lifetime Achievement Award - from Government of Karnataka -, and many more.[1][4] She produced 80 films as of 2012 attracting to be a guest and[or] participator in - Kannada film inaugurations and celebrations; cultural acitivities; resolving disputes among film personalities; and political protests to protect the rights of Kannadigas associated with Kannada language, legitimate Karnataka's share in interstate water disputes, protection of Kannada film industry from piracy, and protection of Kannada cinema from non-Kannada film domination.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Life

She was born at Nanjangud of Mysore district in Karnataka on 6 December 1939 to Appaji Gowda and Lakshmamma as a second child - out of four sons and four daughters. Interestingly, Singanallur Puttaswamaiah, her would-be father-in-law, father of would-be husband Rajkumar(adopted name; original name: Muthuraj), and dear friend of Appaji Gowda, visited when Parvathamma was born and placed a silver coin in the cradle, apparently, vowed to make Parvathamma as his daughter-in-law; accordingly, Parvathamma was married to Rajkumar at the age of 13 or 14 on June 25, 1953.[1][3][12] She was blessed with three sons and two daughters; She gave birth to Shivarajakumar - also known as Shivanna and spelt as Shiv Rajkumar; a superstar in Kannada film industry at present; and married Geetha, daughter of S. Bangarappa -, on July 12, 1961. She then gave birth to two daughters Poornima and Lakshmi. Poornima, later was married to Ram Kumar, a film actor, while Lakshmi was married to a producer and distributor - S A Govindaraj. Parvathamma and Rajkumar were blessed with two more sons Raghavendra Rajkumar - acted in couple of movies but settled in family business; he married Mangala -, and Lohit(nickname:Appu) - changed his name to Puneeth Rajkumar - married Ashwini.[1][2][13]

She started a family banner Vajreshwari Combines[Poornima enterprises] and produced her first movie Trimurthi with her husband in a lead role; Trimurthi movie was a huge success, encouraging her to make all the movies on the same banner with her husband in the lead role.[3] Her brothers S.A. Chinne Gowda, S.A. Govindaraj, and S.A. Srinivas are also film producers.[12][14]

She produced 80 films and launched her three sons as heroes on her family banner; Anna Bond starring his younger son Puneeth Rajkumar is the latest movie as a producer scheduled to be released in 2012. She produced some of the blockbluster movies such as Trimurthy, Haalu Jenu, Kaviratna Kalidasa, Jeevana Chaitra, and many more with her husband in lead role; She produced Anand, Om, Janumada Jodi, and several other movies with her older son Shiv Rajkumar in lead role; Produced movies such as Chiranjeevi Sudhakar, Nanjundi Kalyana, Swasthik, and Tuvvi Tuvvi Tuvvi, and many more with her son Raghavendra Rajkumar in lead role; and movies such as Appu, Abhi, Hudugaru, and several others with her younger son Puneeth in lead role.[1][15]

She had major setbacks when her husband[Dr. Rajkumar] was kidnapped by Veerappan, a forest brigand, for almost 108 days for huge ransom and also when her husband died on April 12, 2006, due to Cardiac arrest.[1][16][17][18][19]
