Thom Jurek of Allmusic gave the album a four star rating, citing it a melancholy record with songs largely revolving around themes of trial and perseverance. He also praised the cover version of "Dimming of the Day" and "My Opening Farewell". Jurek also went to say that it is a very polished, pristine record, however, it feels organic and authentic, allowing plenty of room for the emotional power in these songs to come forth.[3] Andrew Greer of Christianity Today also honored the album with four stars, calling it "an exquisite eleven-song canon," and further commenting, "though their haunts are heavy-hearted, a tangible hope pervades Airplane, attesting to the band's spiritual sensitivity even without the band's usual faith song standout." The album was awarded Grammys in the Best Bluegrass Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical categories at the 54th Grammy Awards.[4]

Commercial

Raising Sand, Krauss' collaboration with Robert Plant, reached number two on the Billboard 200 upon its release in 2007. In addition to these chart, it also debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums and number one on Billboard Folk Albums. As of the chart dated July 23, 2011, the album has sold 249,120 copies in the US.[6]

Paper Airplane was a minor hit in Europe, debuting within the top forty of several European countries; such as the UK Albums Chart and the Norwegian Albums Chart.
