Monotrete is a genus of mostly freshwater pufferfish with one species (M. leiurus) also occurring in brackish water. They are found in Southeast Asia.[1]

Etymology

"Pao" means "purse" in Thai and Lao and is a component of the local names for pufferfish in each language with the other component meaning "fish" - "pla pao" in Thai and "pa pao" in Lao.[1]
