Pankrác
Pankrác (Czech for Pancras) is a neighborhood of Prague, Czech Republic. It is located south of the city centre on the hills of the right bank of the Vltava River and is part of the Prague 4 quarter situated in the district of Nusle. The name derives from the local baroque initially very old church of St Pancras, which is filial to a parish church of St. Wenceslas in Nusle.
Pankrác is known for its Prague Pankrác Remand Prison, and in fact "pankrác" is almost synonymous with "prison" in Czech slang.
Since the 1970s, several high-rise buildings have been built in Pankrác, and still others are being discussed amid some criticism that the skyline may threaten the historical character of Prague.
