Panipat district pronunciation (help·info) (Hindi: पानीपत जिला) is one of the 21 districts of Haryana state in northern India. The historical town of Panipat is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district occupies an area of 1268 km².
History
Panipat district was carved out from the erstwhile Karnal district on 1 November 1989. On 24 July 1991 it was again merged with Karnal district. On 1 January 1992 it again became a separate district.
Divisions
The district is divided into two sub-divisions: Panipat and Samalkha, which are further divided into four tehsils: Panipat, Samalkha, Madlauda and Israna.
There are four Vidhan Sabha constituencies in this districts: Panipat Rural, Panipat City, Israna and Samalkha. All of these are part of Karnal Lok Sabha constituency.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census Panipat district has a population of 1,202,811,[1] roughly equal to the nation of Bahrain[2] or the US state of New Hampshire.[3] This gives it a ranking of 396th in India (out of a total of 640).[1] The district has a population density of 949 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,460 /sq mi) .[1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 24.33%.[1] Panipat has a sex ratio of 861 females for every 1000 males,[1] and a literacy rate of 77.5%.,[1] jats dominated Panipat District, there are 150 villages and 100 are jat dominated. Rest are of tyagi, gujjar and Brahmins.
Industries
Panipat town is known for its traditional handloom industry. The first unit of the thermal power station at Panipat was commissioned on 1 November 1979. Presently it has 8 units and the installation capacity of 1360 MW. Panipat handloom industries are famous across all over the world. It is famous for curtains, bed sheets, blankets and carpets.
