From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pal is a Gotra or clan of Jats found mainly in the state of Punjab in India.

Pal is a Bengali surname, believed to have originated from Sanskrit 'Pala' meaning protector or keeper, and mostly found among Bengali Kayasthas.[1] The Kayasthas evolved in Bengal as a caste from a category of officials or scribes, between the 5th/6th century AD and 11th/12th century AD, its component elements being putative Kshatriyas and, for the larger majority, Brahmins.[2]

'Pal' or its variant 'Paul' is also found among some Bengali middle castes like Teli, Kumhar and Sadgop.
