Patrick "Pa" Cronin (born 20 May 1987) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a midfielder for the Cork senior team.[1] Cronin works as a secondary school teacher.
Cronin joined the extended panel during the 2006 championship and has become a regular player over the last few seasons. During that time he has enjoyed little success on the inter-county scene. Cronin is the current captain of the Cork senior hurling team.
At club level Cronin is a county premier intermediate championship medalist with Bishopstown.
Playing career
Club
Cronin plays his club hurling with Bishopstown and has enjoyed much success, beginning with the club's underage boom in the early 2000s. He won back-to-back county minor championship medals in 2003 and 2004 before later moving onto the club's under-21 team. He won another set of championship medals in this grade in 2006 and 2007. By this time Cronin had also joined the Bishopstown senior hurling team. In 2006 he won a county premier intermediate championship medal following a 0-20 to 1-11 defeat of Carrigtwohill.
Inter-county
Cronin first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork minor hurling team in 2004. That year he won a Munster medal following a 2-13 to 3-8 defeat of Tipperary.[2] Cork were subsequently defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final.
In 2005 Cronin was captain of the Cork minor team as he captured a second consecutive Munster medal following a 2-18 to 1-15 defeat of Limerick.[3] Once again the team was later defeated in their hunt for an All-Ireland title at the penultimate stage of the championship.
Cronin subsequently joined the Cork under-21 team. He won a Munster medal in this grade in 2007 following a 1-20 to 0-10 trouncing of Waterford.
By 2006 Cronin had joined the Cork senior hurling team, however, he played no part in Cork's championship campaign. He made his senior debut in the National Hurling League in 2007, before making his senior championship debut against Clare in the Munster quarter-final later that same year.[4]
In 2013 Cronin was appointed captain of the Cork senior hurling team.[5]
Inter-provincial
Cronin has also lined out with Munster in the inter-provincial series of games. In 2-13 he was at midfield when he claimed his first winners' medal following a 1-22 to 0-15 defeat of Connacht.[6]
