Ovrutskyi district (raion) (Ukrainian: Овруцький район) is a raion (district) of Zhytomyr Oblast, northern Ukraine. Its administrative centre is located at Ovruch. The raion covers an area of 3222 square kilometres and as of 2011 it had a population of 59,856 people.
Brief
It is situated in the north-eastern part of the region. Distance from district (Ovruch) to the regional center - 138 km of motorways and 127 km by railways. Ovruch - one of the oldest cities in Ukraine.
Natural tourist objects
Through this territory the rivers Zherev, Zholon, Slovechna are flowing with their tributaries Bolotnitseyu (Snidovtsem) and Yasyntsem. There is the main part and direction (v. Selezivka) of Polissia Natural Reserve, the reserves of national value “ Didove ozero”, “ Kutne”, natural monuments of national value “ Korniiv”, the reserves of local value “ Berezovyi”, “Slovechanskyi ridge”, “Green moss” “Krasnosilka”, “Krym'ye”, “Ivy”, “Hmeli”, “Long moss”, “Zabolottia”, “Solovyove”, “Tokovyshche”, “Komoryshche”, “Mozharivskyi”, nature sights – ravine “Yazvin”, Hladkovytskyi dendropark, parks - sights of landscape- gardening art of local value (Ovrutskyi, Yulino). Unique geological phenomenon is Slovechansko-Ovrutskyi ridge, which is the highest point of Zhytomyr district (316 m).
Social and historical tourist objects
There is the museum of regional ethnography and the Museum of Partisan Glory Polissia (Slovechne) in the region. The St. Basil church, the monastery buildings with belfry 12th-20th centuries are a monument of architecture and city-planning of national value in Ovruch. The walls of the temple are made of quartzite and thin brick; inside the rooms are faced with pyrophyllites shale and decorated with frescoes. Sights of local value: prisons building, railway station, merchant mansion (all from the 19th century), regional committee room and office building management of agriculture (both - 1950) - all in Ovruch, St. Nicholas Church in the village Levkovychi (1815). In 1941 the formation of OUN-UPA was functioned under the lead by T. Bulba-Borovets, in the years of World War II the guerrilla groups operating under the command of M. Naumova and A. Saburova. With the help of the Czechs in Ovruch a monument to Jan Naleptsi - a national hero of Czechoslovakia, Hero of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia guerrilla detachment commander who was killed during the liberation of the city in 1943. In Ovruch is also a monument to the liberators of the city from Nazi invaders and memorials of the place where the ancient burial Prince Oleg Sviatoslavovych (was set in 1961), and a memorial to Lieutenant O. Pokalchuk (native of the villge Velyka Fosnia), who in 1942 repeated the feat A. Matrosov - closed the holes of the German fascist pillbox.
