Planning for a new school in the area was identified in the 1980s. The capacity is approximately 1300 students. It has a sixth form college, opened in 2003. Since 2008 it has been an International Baccalaureate World School and a specialist English and Humanities College since 2009. However, the International Baccalaureate programme will only be running for the Year Twelve students who began their studies in 2008; due to staff and funding difficulties, the school have been unable to provide the programme to further year groups.
It has a hearing support department and a greater number of students with disabilities because of the purpose-built facilities.
The school ran into controversy in 2010 when £150,000 of the school's general fund was paid to headteacher Mr. Stephen Foxwell after his resignation.[2]
The school became an academy on 1 June 2011.
The latest OFSTED report, dated 4 December 2013, grades the school with 'Requires Improvement', down from 'Good' four years previously.[1]
List of Headmasters
- Mr. Kieran Osborne (1997–2004)
- Mr. Willis (2004–2005)
- Mr. Jones (2005–2006) (Interim)
- Mr. Stephen Foxwell (2006–2008) (After Mr. Foxwell's resignation, deputies Mr. Gerry Bennett and Mr. Keith Stride took over until the end of that academic year.)
- Mr. Peter Butterworth (September 2009 - )
The School provides 7 Years of Education for all students. Year 12 and 13 are the Sixth form. In order for a student to move into the sixth form, they require sufficient GCSE results from the Year 11 Exams at the end of the year. If they have not achieved these grades, then it will require them to search for another Sixth form for further education.
