Olsynium (huilmo in Chile; formerly part of Sisyrinchium) is a genus of 12 species of summer-dormant rhizomatous perennials in the iris family, native to sunny hillsides in South America and western North America.

Description

Height is 10–40 centimetres (4–16 in) tall. Leaves are linear, 4–30 centimetres (1.6–11.8 in) long and 1–3 millimetres (0.04–0.12 in) broad.

Flowers are bell-shaped, with six white, pink, or lilac tepals, and bloom from late winter to spring.

Etymology

The genus name is derived from the Greek words ol, meaning "a little", and syn-, meaning "joined",[1] referring to the stamens.[2]

Species

As of September 2012, the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families recognizes 17 species. All except one are native to South America; O. douglassii is found in western North America, as far north as south western Canada. Most species have at one time or another been included in the related genus Sisyrinchium.[3]
