Olonetsky District (Russian: Олоне́цкий райо́н) is an administrative district (raion), one of the fifteen in the Republic of Karelia, Russia.[1] Municipally, it is incorporated as Olonetsky Municipal District.[3] It is located in the south of the republic. The area of the district is 3,988 square kilometers (1,540 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the town of Olonets.[2] District's population: 23,124 (2010 Census);[5] 27,034 (2002 Census);[8] 30,497 (1989 Census).[9] The population of Olonets accounts for 39.2% of the district's total population.[5]
Demographics
Olonetsky District is the only district in the republic where Karelians form a majority of the population (63.38% in 1989). Natural population growth rate was -12.02 per 1,000 in 1994.
