Olga Kharlan (Ukrainian: Ольга Харлан) (born September 4, 1990 in Mykolaiv, Ukraine)[1] is a Ukrainian fencer (specialising in Sabre) and member of the team which won the gold medal in sabre at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Kharlan was elected Ukraine's "Best Sportswoman of the Year" during the 2008 "Heroes of Sports Year" award.[2] Next to sport, she also peruses a political career.

Sporting career

At the 2006 European Seniors Fencing Championship in Turkey she won the silver medal.[3]

In the final against China at the Sabre team events during the 2008 Summer Olympics, Kharlan was the main drive for victory, staging a spectacular comeback of the Ukrainian team and scoring more than half of the 45 points of victory.

At the 2009 Seniors European Fencing Championship in Bulgaria Kharlan won gold in the women's fencing Sabre final[4] and the Ukrainian team (she was a member of) won gold in the Sabre final beating Russia.[5][6] The team won the title "Team of the Year" at the (Ukrainian) "Heroes of Sports Year 2009" ceremony in April 2010.[7]

At the 2009 World Fencing Championships Kharlan and her teammates beat France to win gold and Kharlan won silver individuality.[8]

During the 2010 European Fencing Championships Kharlan was again a member of this team which again won gold beating Russia once more in the final.[9][10]

Political career

Since the 2010 Ukrainian local elections Kharlan is a member of the Mykolaiv City Council for Party of Regions; she lives in Kiev.[11][12] She was standing for election to the Ukrainian Parliament in the October 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary election but due to an 194th place on the list of Party of Regions she was not elected.[13]
