Ohio elections, 2014

The Ohio general election, 2014 will be held on November 4, 2014 throughout Ohio, with polls open from 6:30 AM to 7:30PM. All voters who wish to vote in the general election must register by October 6, 2014. The close of registration for electors in the primary election is April 7, 2014. and the primary election day will take place on May 6, 2014.[1]

Early Voting

Early and absentee voting dates have not yet been established for 2014. During the week of November 18, 2013, Republicans in the state legislature planned to introduce four bills that would restrict voting in the 2014 elections, including shortening the early voting period from 35 to 29 days.[2]

Federal Representatives

United States Senate

There is no U.S. Senate election in Ohio in 2014. U.S. Senator Rob Portman is a Republican Class III Senator and will be eligible for re-election in 2016. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown is a Democratic Class I Senator and will be eligible for re-election in 2018.

United States House of Representatives

All of Ohio's 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives are up for election in 2014.

State Executive Branch

Governor

Republican Primary
  • Incumbent John Kasich(R) is seeking re-election to a second term. He is limited to two consecutive terms.
  • Ted Stevenot, Tea Party activist and former president of the Ohio Liberty Coalition is reported to be planning to challenge Kasich. This would make Kasich the first incumbent governor to face a primary challenge since 1978. Stevenot had not filed petitions as of the early January 2014.[3]

Lieutenant Governor

The Lieutenant Governor runs on a ticket with the governor.

Republican Primary
  • Incumbent Mary Taylor is expected to seek reelection with Kasich.
  • Brenda L. Mack, a former president of the Ohio Black Republicans Association, is expected to run on a Tea Party ticket with Ted Stevenot.[3]
Democratic Primary
  • Eric Kearney, Minority Leader of the Ohio Senate[7] was FitzGerald's initial pick as a running mate, but he dropped out on December 10 due to increasing controversy surrounding back taxes owed by himself and his wife.[8] As of early January 2014, FitzGerald had not yet named a replacement.

  • Green: Suzanne Patzer

Secretary of State

Republican incumbent Jon Husted was first elected in 2010 and is expected to run for reelection.

State Legislative Branch

Ohio Senate

The 17 odd-numbered seats out of 33 districts in the Ohio Senate are up for election in 2014. Ten of these seats are currently held by Republicans and seven are held by Democrats. Republicans currently control the chamber with a 23 to 10 majority.

Ohio House of Representatives

All 99 seats in the Ohio House of Representatives are up for election in 2014. Republicans currently hold 59 seats and Democrats hold 40 seats.

State Judicial Branch

Supreme Court of Ohio

While judicial races in Ohio are technically nonpartisan (party affiliations are not listed on the ballot), candidates run in party primaries. Terms are six years, and justices may run for reelection an unlimited number of times before their 70th birthday. The Supreme Court currently consists of 6 Republicans and 1 Democrat.

  • Incumbent Justice Judith L. French (R) is eligible to run for another 6-year term.

Court of Appeals

The Ohio District Courts of Appeals consists of 69 judges in 12 districts. Judges serve a 6-year term. Approximately 1/3 of these positions will be up for election in 2014.

Ballot Initiatives

As of November 2013, no initiatives have yet qualified for the 2014 ballot.

The following groups have announced efforts to put issues on the ballot:

  • Freedom Ohio is collecting signatures to legalize gay marriage in the state.[16]
  • Ohio Rights Group is collecting signatures for the Ohio Cannabis Rights Amendment to legalize medical marijuana in Ohio.[17]
