Odessa Art Museum
Odessa Art Museum is located in the Odessa city center, in the palace of the Naryshkin (also called "Potocki Palace", as it was the firstly owned by O. S. Potockaya, who was married Naryshkin), which is a monument of architecture of the early 19th century.
History
Odessa Art Museum was opened on 6 November 1899 through the efforts of the Odessa Society of Fine Arts (founded in 1865). The museum's collection began with the paintings, transferred to the museum of St. Petersburg's Academy of Arts (Russian Academy of Arts ).
The building
The building of the Odessa Art Museum was built in 1828 by the famous Odessa architect Franz Boffo. The first owner of the palace was the Countess O. S. Naryshkina (in her maiden name - Potockaya). In the 1840s, the palace building changed its owners. The palace was acquired from them in 1888 by the city Mayor - Gregory Marazli, and transferred to the Odessa Society of Fine Arts. [ 1]
Collection
The collection of the Odessa Art Museum covers all art forms : painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative arts and averaging more than 10,000 works. In the exhibition, located in 26 halls, are painter's works of the 16th–18th centuries and secular portraits of the 17th century, numerous works of I. K. Aivazovsky, artists of democratic trend in the domestic arts in the second half of the 19th century, first of all, works of members of the Peredvizhniki (often called The Wanderers or The Itinerants). It is the works made by I. Kramskoy, A. Savrasov I. Levitan, I. Shishkin, A. Kuindzhi, I. Repin, Surikov, and many others. The Art of the 19th and 20th centuries is represented by the works of V. Serov, M. Vrubel, N. Roerich, B. Kustodiev, A. Benoit, K. Somova, V. Kandinsky and by the painting of Association of South Russian artists, masters like K. Kostandi, G. Ladyzhenskogo, G. Golovkova, P. Nilusa, N. Kuznetsova. The department of Modern Art presents the artistic life of Odessa from the 1920s to the present day.
