"Obsession" (Hangul: 욕-慾) is a K-Pop song of electronic music genre performed by the South Korean contemporary R&B idol group Shinee.
Background and release
According to Naver Music, "Obsession" belongs to the electronic music genre. The instrumental also made use of electric guitar. The song was composed and arranged by the Los Angeles-based music producers Sean Alexander and Jimmy Burney, as well as John Ho. Alexander also composed "Shout Out", an another from the album. He is also credited for producing Shinee's past hit single "Amigo" from their first album.[1] The lyrics of the piece were penned by Shinee's resident lead vocalist Kim Jonghyun, while the rap parts were written by the group's lead rapper Choi Minho himself. "Obsession" speak of the "love story of a man who screams in pain."[1]
Release and promotion
"Obsession" was included as the fifth track in Shinee's second Korean studio album Lucifer, which was released digitally on July 19, 2010 under the record label of S.M. Entertainment and distributing label of KMP Holdings. It was later performed by Shinee during their first Asia tour Shinee World and the live version was included in live album Shinee World.
The Warrior's Way
The song was chosen as the theme song for the New Zealand-South Korean fantasy-action film The Warrior's Way. An accompanying music video featuring scenes from the film was also released on November 27, 2010.[2]
Reception
"Obsession" charted at the peak spot of 39 on Korean Gaon Chart. K-pop critic McRoth found the instrumentation to be 'haunting yet pretty' and appreciated the layering present in the song. The review also mentioned the 'well-placed' transition from member Taemin’s chest voice into Kim Jonghyun's head voice.[3] Popreviewsnow described the verses of the song as beautiful but the chorus as "being too excessive."[4]
