The song was composed and arranged by the Los Angeles-based music producers Sean Alexander and Jimmy Burney, as well as John Ho. Alexander also composed "Shout Out", an another from the album. He is also credited for producing Shinee's past hit single "Amigo" from their first album.[1] The lyrics of the piece were penned by Shinee's resident lead vocalist Kim Jonghyun, while the rap parts were written by the group's lead rapper Choi Minho himself. "Obsession" speak of the "love story of a man who screams in pain."[1]

Reception

"Obsession" charted at the peak spot of 39 on Korean Gaon Chart. K-pop critic McRoth found the instrumentation to be 'haunting yet pretty' and appreciated the layering present in the song. The review also mentioned the 'well-placed' transition from member Taemin’s chest voice into Kim Jonghyun's head voice.[3] Popreviewsnow described the verses of the song as beautiful but the chorus as "being too excessive."[4]
