OBRA is a town and Assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh which is recently upgraded from the stature of Nagar Panchayat in Sonebhadra district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. OBRA is an abbreviation for "Outer Border of Rihand Area" which is located 120 km from Varanasi at the Banks of Renu & Sone River with population of 52,398 As per 2001 India Census.
Geography
OBRA is located at 24°25′N 82°59′E / 24.42°N 82.98°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 170 metres (557 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] OBRA had a population of 52,398. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. OBRA has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 65%. In OBRA, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Power stations
OBRA stands by the side of the Renu & Sone rivers, a tributaries of the Ganges. The environment around nicely supports the Thermal and Hydel Power Station. The thermal station has 13 units with the total capacity of 1550 MW and the Hydel has a maximum capacity of 99 MW. but the power plant has passed an upgrade of 2 more unit with a power generation capacity of 660MW which is expected to be ready by 2011. The power plant will surely help coping the deficiency of electricity. One of the major achievements for the plant is that it was the Asia's number 1 Thermal Power production plant in the 1980s.
- Economy
OBRA is place consisting majority of business class people with 30% of the people owning stone crushing and transport business. 50% work in the power plant and remaining 20% have their own shops of goods and services. Obra is a fast developing area.
