Nyenrode Business Universiteit, also spelled as Nijenrode, is a Dutch business school and the only private university in the Netherlands. Founded in 1946, it is located on a large estate in the town of Breukelen, between Amsterdam and Utrecht.
History
Nyenrode was founded in 1946 by top executives of Dutch multinational companies, such as Akzo, KLM, Philips, Shell and Unilever. This Nederlands Opleidings Instituut voor het Buitenland (NOIB) was soon named after the thirteenth century Castle of Nyenrode.
In 1982 it was recognized as a university by the Dutch government (Universiteit Nyenrode). In 1992 Nyenrode decided to become independent of Dutch government subsidies, because subsidised universities in the Netherlands were not allowed to have a selection process of students.
Today Nyenrode consists of two schools; the business school and the Nyenrode School of Accountancy and Controlling.[1] A castle is located at the north-east corner of Nyenrode's grounds.
Nyenrode has a strong international reputation in the field of business and management research and education. It maintains close ties with the national and international business communities, a fact that is reflected by its multinational student body. In addition to its educational programs for managers, business leaders and entrepreneurs, Nyenrode also offers a wide range of training programs, tailor made programs and incompany modules for managers in the corporate sector.
Nyenrode offers a PhD program and an Executive Doctorate Program. Nyenrode have recently added Degree preparation Programs[2] to the range of courses on offer, these one year foundation programs provide academic training, English language training and GMAT training for Nyenrodes Bachelor in Business Administration and MBA programs.
Academics
Nyenrode's main focus is on its graduate MBA and MSc in Management programs. The full-time and part-time MBA programs include a two-week module at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management near Chicago. Kellogg's dean Dipak Jain is a visiting professor at Nyenrode. In addition to Kellogg, Nyenrode has close connections with the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, Harvard Business School in the United States of America, the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School in Belgium and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Nyenrode was cofounder of the China Europe International Business School. Nyenrode's international MBA program attracts students from all around the world. Nyenrode has an intensive selection process that involves taking a Graduate Management Admissions Test test and a selection interview. The students attending Nyenrode are of diverse nationalities, therefore most teaching is in English.
Rankings
In the Financial Times Ranking for European Business Schools (2011), Nyenrode was given an overall position of 35th.[3] In the Financial Times Ranking for executive education programs (2011) Nyenrode achieved 24th place for open programmes and 29th for custom programmes. The Masters in Management MSc was given an overall position of 57th on the Financial Times Global Ranking for Masters in Management (2011).
