NowThis News is a startup based in NYC that creates video channels exclusively for audiences across social and mobile platforms. The company makes short form videos for social outlets that include, but aren't limited to, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Vine and YouTube.[1][2] All the videos are then combined into NowThis News's Android and Apple apps and a mobile website, allowing viewers to watch dozens of video updates produced throughout the day. The company's tagline is "the news in your pocket."[1][3][4]

History

NowThis News is a Lerer Ventures startup and portfolio company.[3][5] It was founded by Huffington Post co-founder and former chairman Kenneth Lerer and former Huffington Post CEO Eric Hippeau. Bedrocket founder Brian Bedol, Oak Investment Partners Managing Partner Fred Harman and Nikhil Kalghatgi are investors and board members.[4] Co-Founder Hippeau said, “The idea came as Ken and I were tossing around thoughts in mobile news. It was evident that there was no video news, breaking news, that was created in video format just for mobile devices”.[6][3]

In September 2012 NowThis News, code-named “Planet Daily” during development, announced its executive team and a strategic partnership with Buzzfeed.[7][8] Betabeat reported that this move caused the company’s content to “go viral like chickenpox in Mrs. Henderson’s kindergarten class”.[9] In November 2012, NowThis News launched its iPhone and iPad apps.[7] Since then, the company has launched numerous original content channels across Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, YouTube, Google Plus, Twitter, Facebook and more outlets. All the platforms NowThis News publishes to can be found here.[7]

Leadership

The NowThis News executive team includes Ed O’Keefe, former ABC News Digital Executive Producer as Editor-in-Chief; Katharine Zaleski, former Washington Post Executive Director of Digital News as Managing Editor; Theo Burry, former Technical Director of The Huffington Post as Chief Technology Officer; Steven Belser, former Head of Production of VICE Media as Head of Production; Frank Kavilanz, former VP of Strategy and Business Development for NBC News as SVP of Strategy and Business Development; and Ryan Ricci, former VP Sales at 33Across as VP of Sales.[10]

Advisory board members have included Stephen Colvin, former CEO, The Newsweek Daily Beast Company and Judy McGrath, former Chairman and CEO, MTV Networks.

The company has around 40 employees based in New York and Washington, DC

Awards

In March 2013, Digital Trends listed NowThis News as one of the best apps of the week.[2] This award was for the company’s Android app, launched that same year.[2] In 2013, Business Insider ranked NowThis News as a start up to watch in New York City.[11] NowThis News is a Webby Award nominee.[12] NowThis News was the winner in the Breaking News category at the first ever Vine Awards held in New York City on October 2, 2013.[13]
