Nosound is an Italian progressive rock band that started as a vision by Giancarlo Erra. All of the early recordings were composed, played, produced, engineered, and released by Erra. As time passed, this music became more popular and the demand for live performances increased. Giancarlo then assembled a band of gifted musicians who would eventually become full time members to play the music of Nosound. The band is noted for playing music in several different genres including progressive rock, post rock, and ambient music.
Nosound has been influenced by artists such as Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, and Genesis.
Two of the band's albums won the Italian Progressive Music Awards Best Recording awards:
A Sense of Loss - 2009 Best Recording
Lightdark - 2008 Best Recording
Band history
Giancarlo Erra era 2002-2006
Nosound started as a project by Giancarlo in 2002. He created several solo works, at least one of which is unreleased. His early demo recordings date back to 1998 with an eight track demo titled Radici and a 19 minute instrumental track on the demo CD Maslova. Bassist Alessandro Luci contributed to some of the early tracks. Giancarlo describes the music as "evocative and intense, with personal songwriting". Waves on Russia was the first officially released Nosound demo in 2002, followed by the first promo which was for Sol29
Nosound era 2006-present
These demos generated enough interest for Giancarlo to play his music live. Since there was no "band" per se, it was necessary to assemble a number of quality musicians that could play his music. With time Giancarlo found enough musicians to create a full band. The official Nosound debut album Sol29 was released in March 2005. A short tour followed and resulted in a live DVD The World is Outside in 2006, which contained unreleased material. With all the positive feedback from the live material on the DVD, the very limited edition (100 copies) live CD 'Slow, it goes' was issued in the first half of 2007. The CD was recorded live at Stazione Birra, Rome on 24 Jan 07 and included a Lightdark promo video. In anticipation of the new album, the exclusive EP Clouds, containing three out takes from the new album Lightdark was released. This lineup continued through Clouds, which saw a change of guitarists when Gabriele Savini was replaced with Paolo Vigliarolo.
Lightdark, Nosound's 2nd official album was released in February 2008. It features collaborations with singer Tim Bowness (No-Man) and Marianne DeChastelaine on cello. A remastered edition of Sol29 was released in conjunction with Lightdark.
In July 2008 the band signed to the new post-progressive label Kscope/Snapper, and planned to play a few festivals before returning to the studio later this year to start recording their 3rd release due in 2009. A new 2 cd digipack edition of studio album Lightdark was released on September 15 on Kscope label. This 2 disc edition of the album included an exclusive five track bonus disc including the video for Lightdark.
In 2009, their latest album called A sense of loss was issued. It featured a four-string band collaboration which gave it a space rock atmosphere.
In 2012 an EP titled At The Pier was released featuring new band members Chris Maintland on Percussion and Marco Berni on Keyboards. This release is in advance of a new studio album to be released in early 2013. The EP contains 3 tracks and features Marianne DeChastelaine on cello.
During the making of At The Pier, the next album, titled Afterthoughts was also being recorded. Due to be released in early May 2013, the album was created with the members aligned with At The Pier. A new drummer (Giulio Caneponi) was brought on board as a permanent member. Marianne DeChastelaine was also featured in at least one track of the album. As an added bonus with the release, the first 500 orders of the CD/DVD or Vinyl editions also received a special instrumental version of the album.
