Design and description

Norwegian Getaway is the sister vessel of Norwegian Breakaway, and was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, for Norwegian Cruise Line. The vessel is scheduled to enter service in February 2014.[2] The name of the ship was selected in a competition, and was submitted by Dennis Hultman of Vienna, Virginia, United States.[3] NCL expect the ship to be based out of Miami year-round.[4] David Le Batard was commissioned by NCL to design the mural on the front of the ship.[5]

A fire broke out at the shipyard on 5 March 2013, but no-one was injured and it was not expected to delay the delivery of the vessel.[2] Smoke from the fire did result in production areas and the visitors centre being evacuated.[6]

Entertainment and restaurants

Entertainment on board the ship includes the "Illusionarium", an entertainment venue devoted to magic and illusion performances. It also includes a 30 feet (9.1 m) high video dome in the middle of the performance area.[7] The water park has five slides, including a freefall drop and two twister slides located side by side in a spiral.[7]

There is a Grammy entertainment venue which includes items taken from the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. In line with this, Norwegian Cruise Line became the "Official Cruise Line Partner of the Grammy Awards".[7] Chef Geoffrey Zakarian has food venues on board the ship including the Ocean Blue concept that is already installed on Norwegian Breakaway. Ocean Blue forms part of the area on the ship called "The Waterfront" which allows for outdoor dining in most of the restaurants on board.[4] The decking for the waterfront area is provided by Bolidt, who also provided the same for Breakaway.[8] The end of each cruise will be marked by a fireworks display at sea.[7]

Itineraries

The vessel arrived in Southampton from Rotterdam at 0800 UTC on 14 January, leaving for two crew work-up day-cruises in the English Channel on the 14th and 15th January, before departing from Southampton for New York at 17.00 UTC on Saturday 16th January.[9]

While in New York everything that calls it the "Norwegian Getaway" is to be temporarily removed and the ship is to be rechristened the "Bud Light Hotel" as it will house 4,000 people during its docking at the New York Passenger Ship Terminal during the week of Super Bowl XLVIII.[10]

The ship will begin sailing from Miami starting late January 2014. It will sail 7 Night Caribbean Cruises Year-Round sailing to Philipsburg, Sint Maarten,Charlotte Amalie, United States Virgin Islands, and Nassau, Bahamas.
