Northway (K’ehtthiign[1] in Upper Tanana Athabascan) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 71 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Northway is located at 62°58′9″N 141°54′18″W / 62.96917°N 141.90500°W / 62.96917; -141.90500 (62.969297, -141.905034)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 20.9 square miles (54 km2), of which, 19.2 square miles (50 km2) of it is land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2) of it (8.45%) is water.

The highest sea-level pressure in North America was recorded at Northway on January 31, 1989 with a reading of 31.85 inches, a record only surpassed by two readings in Siberia.[3] Due to aircraft altimeters only being able to calibrate to 31 inches, most were grounded.

Transportation

There is a shuttle between Tok and Northway three times a week, connecting with the Fairbanks - Glennallen - Anchorage service.

Demographics

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 95 people, 30 households, and 18 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5.0 people per square mile (1.9/km²). There were 40 housing units at an average density of 2.1 per square mile (0.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 17.89% White, 71.58% Native American, and 10.53% from two or more races.

There were 30 households out of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 4.22.

In the CDP the age distribution of the population shows 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 3.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 126.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 131.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $59,375, and the median income for a family was $59,375. Males had a median income of $36,875 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $16,430. There were 20.0% of families and 21.1% of the population living below the poverty line, including 6.5% of under eighteens and 60.0% of those over 64.

Education

Northway is part of the Alaska Gateway School District. Walter Northway School, a K-12 campus, which serves community students.
