The municipality of Nord-Rana was established on 1 January 1923 when the old municipality of Mo was split into the town of Mo i Rana and the rest of the old municipality became Nord-Rana. On 1 January 1964, Nord-Rana was merged with the town of Mo i Rana and parts of the municipalities of Sør-Rana and Nesna to create the large, new municipality of Rana.
