Characters

Main characters

Yato (夜ト)
Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya
Yato is a god who attempts to build his own shrine. He wears a jersey and so-called fluffy scarf and refers to himself as "Yato God" (Yatogami). When his current Shinki (Divine Weapon) quit, he was unarmed until he met Hiyori and Yukine. He calls himself "delivery god" and often puts his own cell number on several common places in case someone needs his help. He usually charges for 5 yen, what Japanese people usually give when praying at a shrine.
Hiyori Iki (壱岐 ひより Iki Hiyori)
Voiced by: Maaya Uchida
An ordinary middle school girl at her senior year. After saving Yato, she somehow becomes stuck between the human world and afterlife, causing her soul to suddenly be freed from her body. Hiyori comes from a wealthy family. Her father is a doctor and has a hospital. She idolizes the wrestling star Tono, even copying his moves to defend herself. The 'tail' on her back is not actually a tail but a connector of her and her body. If it gets cut, Hiyori will die. She has an older brother who is far older than her.
Yukine (雪音)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji
The current Shinki of Yato. Died at a young age, making him miss his normal life as a middle schooler. He acts like his age, and was once stealing money from people with the excuse that it's okay since he's dead. Even though Yato is his master, Yukine doesn't really show respect to him as much as how he actually respects Yato. After being 'saved' by Hiyori, he becomes more obedient to Yato and Hiyori. He's only a year younger than Hiyori. His shape as a Shinki is a naked blade of a katana.

Others

Tenjin (天神)
Voiced by: Tōru Ōkawa
The infamous god.
Mayu (真喩)
Voiced by: Asami Imai
Yato's former Shinki. Tomone is her name given by Yato when she's still Yato's shinki.
Kofuku (小福)
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki
Poverty God who has a good relationship with Yato. Energetic but gentle.
Daikoku (大黒)
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono
Kofuku's shinki and is somewhat protective over her. His shape as a Shinki is a fan.
Bishamonten (毘沙門天)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
The strongest Combat God, she possesses many Shinki due to being unable to abandon spirits attacked by Ayakashi. She wants to kill Yato because in the past he supposedly killed one of her Shinki, Tōma.
Kazuma (兆麻)
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama
One of Bishamonten's Shinki. His shape as a Shinki is a flower-shaped earring, and is capable of tracking enemies. He has some kind of debt towards Yato, calling him his benefactor.
Nora (野良)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya
Yato's former Shinki. "Nora" means "stray," and is how the gods call any Shinki with many masters and many names.

1 "A Housecat, a Stray God, and a Tail"
"Ieneko to Noragami to Shippo" (家猫と野良神と尻尾)
January 5, 2014
Mutsumi is sitting in her classroom, and is being bullied by her classmates, when she sees a "phantom" outside her classroom window. She prays to God to save her. Yato responds by tossing and catching a 5 yen coin, and then destroys the phantom with his Shinki (Divine Weapon), who was in the form of Tomone. When the battle is finished, Yato then reverts Tomone back to her human form and she rudely comments on Yato's behavior and how she "had enough." She tells Yato that she insists on quitting then starts to cry. Yato, unable to stop her crying, agrees to let her go. After which, Tomone's real attitude surfaces and she parts with the least bit of respect for Yato. After writing his cellphone number on a wall in a park, he eventually gets a call about "Milord" being missing. It turns out that this call, was in fact about a missing cat named "Milord." Yato finds the cat in the middle of the road and chases it, where he is pushed out of the way of a bus by Iki Hiyori, resulting in her being hit. After Hiyori awakens in her family's hospital and spends the night, she is awoken by the voices of phantoms, and finds Yato in her bed. She retreats with cat-like reflexes. After telling her that she is the first human to ever save him, Yato introduces himself as a god. The two talk, and Yato leaves via the window. A few days later, Yato uses catnip to find Milord, and is then attacked by a phantom which Milord was teasing. Hiyori then appears and runs away with Yato. After Hiyori attacks the phantom, and the two manage to lose it, Yato ponts behind her (at her "tail") and tells Hiyori that her soul has leaked out. Hiyori collapses back into her body. Yato returns Milord to his home and carries Hiyori. After she wakes up and calls Yato a pervert, he explains about her being stuck in between the Far Shore (in human terms, the afterlife) and the Near Shore (where the living reside). Hiyori asks for his help, seeing as he is a god, and he holds up five fingers and requests money in return. Hiyori mistakes the cost for 50, 000 yen, and 500, 000 yen, but Yato tells her the correct amount, 5 yen.
2 "Snow-like"
"Yuki no Yōna" (雪のような)
January 12, 2014
Hiyori once again leaves her body, this time while bathing. At school, while changing for a class, she leaves her body again. She then decides to wander the city as she is able to move more swiflty in her 'living phantom' form, and she eventually winds up in a park. Yato gets a call from Hiyori, who doubts his claims that he is a god because he is yet to help her, and he appears next to her suddenly, asking that, if he weren't a god, how could he do that (he had moved from a train where he was writing his cellphone number on an advertising board, to right next to Hiyori)? He then tells her that he cannot do anything without a Shinki. He then gets a call from someone asking for help (it turns out to be cleaning the mould from a bathroom wall) and disappears. Hiyori then takes it upon herself to find a Shinki for him. After Yato gets yet another call from Hiyori, who claims to have found a Shinki, he yet again appears before her only to find that the so-called Shinki she found was a bona-fide phantom. Hiyori then tries to attack it but is stopped by Yato, who pulls on her "tail." Yato is then bitten by the phantom. He injures it, causing the phantom to temporarily retreat. He prevents Hiyori from touching his injury, explaining that his arm has been "blighted," which is a type of defilement that spreads, and that unless it is excorcised or cleansed, it remains and eats away at you. Yato then explains that Hiyori's "tail" is not a tail, but a lifeline that connects her physical and ethereal forms. The phantom reappears and they retreat from the phantom once more. Yato stops dead in his tracks because he found an uncorrupted spirit. He claims it as his Shinki, and it transforms into its weapon form, a katana. Yato then sees a flashback of the spirit's memories and stands still on the top of a powerpole, seemingly in shock, and then starts to collapse. He is then eaten by the phantom, katana in hand. Hiyori screams his name, and Yato, inside the phantom, opens his eyes and chants. He then kills the phantom, and lands on powerlines, and then falls to the ground. He lays on the ground for a moment, crying. Later, he is seen cleansing his hand with the katana propped up beside him. He tells Hiyori that the katana's name is Yuki, and less formally, Yukine. The katana then reverts to his human form, a teenage boy with blond hair and orange eyes. As Yuki is cold, Yato offers him his jersey top, but the former rejects it, stating that it reeks of sweat. This leaves Yato standing in a state of shock with a blank look on his face.
3 "Bidden Calamity"
"Manekareta Yakusai" (招かれた厄災)
January 19, 2014
Yukine was changing into his clothes and wondered why he could "feel" things around him when he was already long dead. Yato called for Hiyori who eventually treat them to a meal. In the cafe, the waitress only served drinks to Hiyori before being told off by Yato that there should be three glasses instead. Hiyori then clarified with Yato on how people are able to see him when he is not human. After a hearty meal, Hiyori talks to Yukine while waiting for Yato outside the cafe. Somehow Yukine had a dirty thought which resulted to Yato having a shock of pain. There Yato scolded Yukine about how he knew about it - simply because God and Shinki shares the same mind and body. While Yato and Yukine were arguing, Yato suddenly got a phone call thus he teleported with Yukine and Hiyori. They landed up in a shrine with maidens surrounding them before the God of learning, Lord Tenjin, appeared while reciting the Sugawara-no-Michizane poem. Lord Tenjin told Yato his reason for calling him - to kill some phantoms at a railway track. He then calls for one of his Regalia, Makoto (Mayu) which is a smoking pipe to accompany Yato which makes the latter shock because Makoto (Mayu) was actually his previous Shinki and they landed in an argument. Upon reaching the scene, Mayu told them about how the scene area was often plaque by "storms" whereby the phantoms that are clinging to the people are able to take control. Hiyori, full of determination, believed that to resolve it was to defeat the phantoms that has possess the people but Yato went against her by telling her that if a person wants to die, let them be because they have already possessed. This led to Hiyori feeling unhappy and jumping off. Yato was about to leave the scene before Mayu reminded him how he actually accepted Lord Tenjin's money and Yukine asking if it was fine to leave Hiyori. Burdened by guilt, Yato stop and told Yukine in a serious tone that it was their first job together and Yukine would have to come forth when he is being called for the katana and revert when his name, Yuki is called. Hiyori on the other hand, tried to kill one of the phantoms found on the shoulder of a schoolboy by giving her "shushi roll kick" but was later captured by other phantoms and thrown to the tracks of the railway. Yato with Yukine, who is now in the katana form, saves her before the three of them approaches the "storm". Nearby the storm, Yato, using the powers of his Katana managed to rend the "storm" and prevented a schoolboy from crossing over. However, this resulted some of the things nearby such as trees, traffic light and metal railings to be sliced too and Yato called for Yukine immediately to revert to his human form because he cut too well. .
4 "Where Happiness Lies"
"Shiawase no Arika" (しあわせの在処)
January 26, 2014
Yato was dreaming before Yukine kicks him down the stairs for being too noisy in the middle of the night. Hiyori came over to give lunchboxes to Yato and Yukine and hoping that Yato would finally hear her request of returning back to normal. However, her request was still not being heard and Yato was being funny telling how much his dreams would come true after buying some scam items. However, this led to Hiyori being angry because Yato was not being serious so he decided to bring both Yukine and Yato to a shop where he meets Kofuku whom he introduces her as his girlfriend. While scamming her, Kofuku's shinki, Daikoku came kicking him for being near his master. They were later offered tea and Yato was kicked away again for scaring Yukine and Hiyori by stating that Daikoku loves to stare at children. A while later, Kofuku shared with Yukine that she knew Yato through bad rumors and Yato appearing again because he got a job phone call, leaving Daikoku wondering to why Yato brought the two over. The phone call made was by a man who wanted to jump off a building yet his call to Yato was a mistake because he actually wanted to call his mother to give his last words. However, Yato accidentally falls over him and all of them came falling off the building. In the midst of the long fall which seems funny, the two of them exchanged introduction and the guy, Urasawa Usuke decides to tell his story and the reason to why he decided to end his life. However, the story as related by Urasawa seemed rather familiar and Yato identified Kofuku as being part of it, he told the latter to forget about her because she was the God of Poverty which explains Urasawa's story. Yato suggested for the ties to be severed so he will not have any memory of her but Urasawa was against it - stating that it was alright to die for love. Yato punches him and said that it was not the right thing to do,summoning Yukine to his Katana form and severed his memory of Kofuku. The three then went back to the shop where Daikoku praises Yukine for being able to severe someone ties even though it was his first time and collected his 5 yen payment. Hiyori on the other hand, stayed back to ask about the bad rumors which Kofuku mentioned earlier and got scared when she said that Yato kills people too. While on her way back, Yato hugs her by the shoulder telling her to go to Daikoku and Kofuku in case if anything happens to him. At the same time, Yukine was by a pond throwing rocks and thinking about what Yato said - him falling for Yukine at first sight before a girl with body full of characters addressed as "Nora" suddenly appears, having Yukine staring at her in shock and Yato and Hiyori running.
5 "Borderline"
"Kyōkaisen" (境界線)
February 2, 2014
Yato teaches Yukine on how to create a borderline which serves as a shield and weapon for Shinkis. Hiyori decides to bring Yukine back to her house because she felt that Yato was not able to look after him. After endless arguments, with Yato receiving shock sharp pains, Hiyori successfully brought him home. She let him use her brother's room but it seemed that Yato has his plans of entering Hiyori's house too which cased her to be in a state of disapproval. He then told her that it was better to have Yukine stay with him because Yukine has fear for the dark. Hiyori calls him to sleep next to her where he actually had the urge to grope her before Yato actually pulled him away. The next day, Yukine almost stole a skateboard but was stopped by Hiyori which made him ran away. Yato appears and explain to her the theory to how he got the pains from a Shinki's temptation and how one day he will give Yukine a divine punishment. Yukine was running because it has turned dark before he was stopped by a little girl who was crying in a corner. Thanks to the little girl's pleas, he accompanies her under a lamp post but he suddenly said something wrong which made the girl cry. Eventually, he found out that the girl was already possessed. Yato managed to save him but he was hesitant to kill the phantom because the girl was in it but Yato pushes him through and he was able to rend it. A lady with a lion and a gun appears with someone telling her of Yato's new Shinki.
