Noël Chabanel (February 2, 1613 – December 8, 1649) was a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, and the youngest of the Canadian Martyrs.
Biography
Chabanel was born on Feb. 2, 1613. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Toulouse at the age of seventeen, and was a professor of rhetoric at the Jesuit colleges from 1632-1639. He continued his studies and in 1641 was ordained a priest.[1] In 1643, he was sent to New France, and after studying the Algonquin language for a time, was appointed to the mission at Sainte-Marie, where he remained till his death. In his apostolic labours he was the companion of Fr. Charles Garnier. Chabanel was martyred on December 8, 1649, by what is described as a "renegade" Huron.[2]
