History

The line was first opened in April 1924 as the Mitsui Electric Tramway (三井電気軌道 Mitsui Denki Kidō) between Hiyoshi and Amagi Station. In June 1924 the line was absorbed into the Kyushu Railway system, becoming the Mitsui Line. From 9 November 1948, the line voltage was raised to 1,500 V DC, and from 23 November 1948, through-running commenced with the Tenjin Ōmuta Line. From 1 October 1989, wanman driver only operation commenced on the line.[1]
