Nina Byers

Nina Byers (born January 19, 1930)[1] is a theoretical physicist, Research Professor and Professor of Physics emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, UCLA.[2]


Contributions

Her scientific contributions have mainly been in particle physics and the theory of superconductivity. A major contribution[citation needed] is a paper [3] written with C. N. Yang that showed that flux quantization in superconductors in units of hc/2e is experimental evidence for the Cooper pairing of electrons described in the BCS theory of superconductivity.

In addition to scientific papers she has published scholarly papers and a book on history of 20th century physics. Some of these highlight contributions to modern physics of 20th century female physicists.

Byers developed the website Contributions of 20th Century Women to Physics (CWP website)[4] which details and documents original and important contributions to physics by over 80 female physicists of the 20th century.

A book[5] based on data in the CWP website expands further the biographies and contributions of forty of the most outstanding 20th century female physicists was published in 2006 edited by Nina Byers and Gary Williams.

She has been elected to many offices in The American Physical Society (APS) and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), including President of the APS Forum on History of Physics (2004–2005), APS Forum on Physics and Society (1982), and APS Councilor-at-large of the Society (1977–81).[citation needed]

Her academic degrees are B.A. University of California, Berkeley, M.S. and Ph.D. University of Chicago, M.A. University of Oxford.
