Nilokheri is a town and a municipal committee in Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. It has 13 wards. The town is located about 143 km from Delhi on National Highway 1 and is well connected to rail routes as well.

History

In 1948, after the Partition of India, it was established to house the displaced persons coming from Pakistan by establishing a new township at Nilokheri, Karnal, Haryana at that time Punjab. Nilokheri was founded and planned as the new capital of the state of Punjab. Impressed by the planning of the town, Pandit Jawhar Lal Nehru used to call it the town of his dreams. However, the town faced a heavy flood at a time when only 7 of its many planned sectors were developed. In view of this, the capital of Punjab was kept at Chandigarh.

Geography

Nilokheri is located at 29°50′N 76°55′E / 29.83°N 76.92°E / 29.83; 76.92.[1] It has an average elevation of 237 metres (777 feet).

Physiography

The town Nilokheri is surrounded by Chautang Nalla, a natural drain in the north, railway line and Chautang Nalla in the west, G. T. Road in the east and Rakshi distributory and Indri Drain in the South. All these act as physical barrier in the expansion of the town.

Nilokheri has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 69%. Nilokheri's Electric Supply Undertaking is managed by the UHBVN.BSNL provides tele-services for landline and mobile and many other services. Many private telecom operators are also offering their services in the city as Vodafone Essar, Airtel, Idea, Reliance, Tata, MTS, Aircel. Utility services are well managed including water supplies, irrigation and agriculture, banking. Medical services are served by a Civil Hospital and private hospitals.

By rail it is on the main BG line that connects the national capital to Chandigarh. Nilokheri is now well connected with major cities of India via rail routes and one of the most profitable station in Northren Railways. Nilokheri Railway Station with station code NLKR.

Roadways

National Highway 1 (India) Grand Trunk Road built by Sher Shah Suri passes through Nilokheri. Roads connecting major cities are providing movement for passenger and freight traffic. There is a district road connecting Kurukshetra to Salarpur to Nilokheri HR State highway 33 Karsa Dhand (N.K.D.) road serving the purpose of connectivity of nearby towns and villages.

Healthcare

There is a civil hospital run by state government having variety of facilities fulfilling the purpose of ill and diseased people. There is also a Veterinary Hospital in Poultry Area, Nilokheri.

Places of interest

There are some very few places to visit in Nilokheri. Gole Market Park is one of them. It is situated almost at the center i.e. heart of the city surrounded by the local market. Many people come to this place in morning and evening. Govt. High school play ground and Polytechnic Institute's play ground for games, Dusshera, Diwali celebrations etc.

It was re-established in 1951 is affiliated with the Haryana State Board of Technical Education (HSBTE),[2] Panchkula and approved by All India Council of Technical Education , New Delhi (AICTE) and the Department of Technical Education, Govt. of Haryana (DTE). It is one of the best in North India. Diploma holders from this institute serve in various Govt. Organization and Institution all over India.

History

Guru BrahmaNand Ji Govt. Polytechnic Nilokheri is one of the premier Technical Institution in the country with an international repute. The Institute is situated at a distance of 143 km. from Delhi on National Highway-I towards north. This Institute was originally located at Rasool (West Punjab) as Govt. school of Engg. After partition, it was shifted to Chhachhrauli (Distt. Yamunanagar) and subsequently to Nilokheri in 1951. Nilokheri Polytechnic, Nilokheri established by the Govt. of India in 1947, was already in existence. Both these institutes kept running simultaneously till 1958 when these were merged on recommendation of Govt. of India and named as Punjab Polytechnic, Nilokheri with the reorganizing of the State on November 1, 1966, this institute was renamed as Haryana Polytechnic, Nilokheri, it was again renamed as Govt. Polytechnic Nilokheri, and recently it is renamed as Guru BrahmaNand Ji Govt. Polytechnic Institute Nilokheri.

It comes under Directorate of Printing,Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation. The Press prints Gazette of India, Exim Policy,Union Budget work, Railway Budget, Demands for Grants of each Ministry, A.I.R., C.B.I. Bulletin, Forms of G.I.F.S., Income Tax, Delhi Police, ITBP, CRPF, Army, Air Force and other Ministries, Deptt. including Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Manuals, Annual Reports, Periodicals, Election jobs (Ballot papers) etc. In 1972, Top Secret Wing in the press also started functioning and secret jobs of various Ministries and Government Offices started printing in this press. Letter Press Technology has become old and production was also going down. As such Directorate of Printing decided to change over to new technology in phase manner. Since printing technology has changed, as such it was felt to modernise the press. In 1995, First phase of modernisation was started and completed in 1996-1997.
