Nigton, Texas

Nigton is a community on FM's 2262 and 2501 in Trinity County, Texas. It is 17 miles from Groveton. It was founded by former slaves in 1873. In 1896, the town had 3 churches, a sawmill and gin, a wagonmaker, shoemaker, and a population of 500. The post office opened in 1894 and closed in 1923. By the 1940s, a school, church and store remained. The population was 10 at this time. In 1990, the population was 34, many of whom were descendants of the slaves who founded the town.
