From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicholas Vines (born Sydney, 1976), is an Australian composer currently based in Sydney. He studied at the University of Sydney with Anne Boyd, Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards. He completed a PhD at Harvard University studying with Harrison Birtwistle, Bernard Rands, Magnus Lindberg, Julian Anderson, Lee Hyla, Mario Davidovsky, Judith Weir, and Michael Finnissy.

Vines's music is always direct, gestural and colourful, and at the same time displays a high degree of technical virtuosity. This allows for the seamless formation of rhetorical structures allied to complex motivic transformations.
