Neoga is a city in Cumberland County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area. The current mayor of Neoga is Wayne Modglin, a councilman who was appointed to the position following the resignation of Jay Russell. The Mayor before Jay Russell was Gary Mercer.
Neoga was incorporated in 1856. Neoga means "deer" in the Indian language Kickapoo.
Geography
Neoga is located at 39°19′18″N 88°27′8″W / 39.32167°N 88.45222°W (39.321769, -88.452109).[1]
According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 1.43 square miles (3.7 km2), all land.[2]
Demographics
As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,854 people, 661 households, and 475 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,372.9 people per square mile (530.2/km²). There were 720 housing units at an average density of 533.2 per square mile (205.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.63% White, 0.27% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.92% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.
There were 661 households out of which 41.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,500, and the median income for a family was $40,750. Males had a median income of $29,405 versus $20,607 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,173. About 8.9% of families and 11.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.5% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.
