It is in origin a patronymic meaning "son of Nels" (Scandinavian) or "son of Nell" (Irish). Many derived from Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, also known as Lord Nelson, a British admiral known for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars.
