Nelakondapally is a town and headquarters of a mandal in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh, India, located 21 km from Khammam.

Nelakondapalli is located at a major road junction on the routes from Khammam to Kodad and Kusumanchi. Transportation by bus and car is available to take travellers from Nelakondapalli to nearby villages such as Bodulabanda,Mandrajupally,Anantanagar, Aregudem and Kattukachavaram.

History

Nelakondapalli is a historic site encompassed by a mud fortification wall covering nearly 100 acres (0.40 km2). Excavations have unearthed foundations of brick built Viharas, wells, cisterns, a Mahastupa,[1] terracotta figurines, a bronze idol of Buddha, a miniature Stupa carved in limestone, and other materials from the third and fourth centuries. Archaeological sites known as Virataraju Dibba and Keechaka Gundam claiming importance from the days of the Mahabharata are located one mile (1.6 km) from Nelakondapalli. Relics unearthed at these places strengthen the belief that this place was noted as far back as the days of Mahabharata.

Temples

There are very ancient temples in the village, including three Shiva temples and two Vaishnava temples. The Dusshera festival is celebrated in a special way in Nelakondapalli and attracts many devotees from other villages. Sri Ramanavami is celebrated at Bhaktaramadas Dhyana Mandiram (meditation center) in collaboration with Bhadrachalam Sri Rama temple and the local villagers. Sri Bhaktha Ramadas memorial festival is celebrated every year between 28 April and 2 May.

Bhaktha Ramadas

Nelakondapalli was the birthplace of Kancharla Gopanna, popularly known as Bhakta Ramadas. Bhakta Ramadas Memorial Building, which was constructed at the birthplace of Sri Bhakths Ramadasu in 1955, renamed as Bhakta Ramadasu Dhyana Mandiram, was handed over to Sri Seeteramachandra Swamy Devastanam, Bhadrachalam, in 1983 for development.
