Nazeel Azami (Bengali: নাজিল আজামি; born August 1981) is an English singer-songwriter of spiritual music.

Early life

Azami is of Bangladeshi descent, and grew up in London and Manchester. He went to a primary school in London, secondary schools in three different countries, and attended the University of Manchester studying BSc Physics with Business Management, and PGCE.[1]

Azami developed his music talent at a very young age after his mother encouraged him to memorise and recite classical, traditional poetry and songs. He was further influenced by his maternal uncle who was also a singer-songwriter and poet.[2][3]

Career

In September 2006, Azami released his first album Dunya,[4] under Awakening Records.[5] The album combined different languages, themes and cultures.[6] Previously he had featured as a backing vocalist on Sami Yusuf's first album Al-Mu`allim. He sings in a number of languages including, English, Bengali, Arabic and Urdu.[1]

In November 2006, he performed at the Global Peace and Unity Event in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre London organised by Islam Channel.[7]

From 2010 to 2011, Azami was previously employed as a secondary and sixth form teacher of Islamic Sciences and Arabic at London East Academy Boys School.[8]

In 2013, after taking a five year hiatus, Azami is due to return with a new music video and album under British record label UMA Global.
