Nature is innate behavior (behavior not learned or influenced by the environment), character or essence, especially of a human. This is a way of using the word nature which goes back to its earliest forms in Greek.[citation needed]

Nature versus nurture is a popular phrase used to describe debates over the relative degrees to which one's genetic makeup (nature) and one's life experiences (nurture) influence one's traits or attributes.
