Mandela National Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Uganda.
Location
The stadium is located on Naboole Hill, in Bweyogerere Ward, in Kira Municipality, in Wakiso District. This location lies approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi), by road, east of the central business district of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest metropolitan area.[1] The coordinates of the stadium are:0° 20' 51.00"N, 32° 39' 31.00"E (Latitude:0.347500; Longitude:32.658610).
Overview
Mandela National Stadium is mainly used for soccer matches, although other sports such as track and field are also practiced. The stadium has a seating capacity of 45,202.[2] The stadium is home to the Ugandan national soccer team, the Uganda Cranes as well as two first league teams; Uganda Revenue Authority FC and Uganda Police FC. It also hosts league encounters that are broadcast by pay television, GTV.
History
The stadium was built with a grant of US$36 million from the People's Republic of China. Originally it was called Namboole Stadium, getting its name from the hill on which it was built. It is now officially called Mandela National Stadium, named after the South African icon, the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 - 2013). It was opened in 1997 with a concert by the late Lucky Dube, a reggae artist from South Africa.
