National Audiovisual Archive
The National Audiovisual Archive (Finnish: Kansallinen audiovisuaalinen arkisto, formerly Finnish Film Archive Finnish: Suomen elokuva-arkisto; Swedish: Finlands filmarkiv) is a Finnish government institution under the Ministry of Education, established in 1957. Its purpose is to acquire, restore and conserve films, radio and TV programms and other related material.
National Audiovisual Archive has underground storage rooms in an underground vault in Otaniemi, Espoo. Domestic film materials, black-and-white film materials, domestic and foreign prints and paper materials are stored there in cool air-conditioned conditions. National Audiovisual Archive engages in and supports film research and promotes the knowledge of cinema. Its library contains books and magazines, film sheet music, newspaper clippings and offers information service.
National Audiovisual Archive also presents cinematographically, historically or otherwise significants films. Its 216-seat movie theater Orion is situated in Eerikinkatu/Eriksgatan 15 in Helsinki. Orion was built in Art Deco style and was established in 1927. In addition to regular screenings in Orion, the Finnish Film Archive also arranges screenings elsewhere in Finland.
On 1 January 2008, Finnish Film Archive changed its name to National Audiovisual Archive when the scope was expanded to include all audiovisual material, including radio programs and television programs. In January 2014, Finnish Centre for Media Education and Audiovisual Media and National Audiovisual Archive was merged to form National Audiovisual Institute (Finnish: Kansallinen audiovisuaalinen instituutti or KAVI).[1]
