Narjis (Greek: Νάρκισσος) was the mother of Muhammad al-Mahdi the twelfth and last Imam of Shi'a Islam and the granddaughter of a Roman/Byzantine Caesar .
There are many traditions regarding her ancestry, saying that she was Roman.[1]
Her name has been recorded as Rayhana, Narjis, Sayqal, Hadith or Suwsan in Shia's books.[2] There are a couple of narrations regarding the origin of her mother. Her mother was a descendant of Simon one of the companion of Jesus.
Narration says that she was a Roman Princess who pretended to be a slave so that she might travel from her kingdom to Arabia.[3][4]
Less narrations state that she's a Nubian slave but are weak and far less present than the others and are maybe a mixed with narrations regarding the mother of the 9th Imam al Jawad.
The stronger theory is that she was the North Africa Roman princess of Numidia which was called at that time Caeserea Mauretanea which is now named Cherchell in Algeria.
