Five years later, though, in 2000, the ban was eventually lifted, following a legal battle and Dr. Azad won a legal battle for the ban to be lifted.[2] The High Court of Bangladesh provide that the prohibition is invalid.[3]
Summary
Naree, is the first book in Bengali about feminism, here is a feminist analysis of the structure of women's status and condition in civilizations created by man. Women who are not born, creations by male day by day. The book is known for anti-establishment and anti-religious fanaticism of Bengali writer Humayun Azad. This is the first comprehensive discussion in Bengali about feminism and difficulties of Bengali women faced in their pursuit of daily-life. The radicalism inherent in the work was enough for many to think back on The Second Sex written by western feminist Simone de Beauvoir. In the work, Dr. Azad takes readers on a journey through the broad swathes of experience feminist writers in South Asia have gone through in their writings. At the same time, Azad cannot hold himself back from taking swipes at major figures in, including the venerated Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam for what he thought was their anti-feminist perceptions of life.[4]
In this book Dr. Azad has done a great job by analytically compiling the feminist ideas of the west, which underlie the feminist contributions of the subcontinent's socio-political reformers. Azad has exposed the anti-women stance of some legendary Bangali writers including Rabindranath Tagore in his monumental work. The work, critical of the patriarchal and male-chauvinistic attitude of religions towards women, attracted the wrath of the conservative censors.[5]
