NHS, Inc. is a United States skateboard equipment and apparel company based in Santa Cruz, California.[1] NHS's main products are skateboard-related,[2] but the company also manufactures snowboarding[1][3] and surfing equipment.[4] As of October 2013, the Santa Cruz brand, distributed by NHS, is the oldest continuous skateboard company in the world.[5]

Logos

The "Screaming Hand", designed by Jim Phillips Sr. in 1973 is the main logo of the Santa Cruz brand.[6] The logo has become a skateboarding icon and is recognized widely throughout the skateboarding community—as of February 2013, Phillips's son Jimbo also designs artwork for the Santa Cruz brand.

A controversy arose in February 2013, following the appearance of designs very similar to the Phillips's on clothing designed by Jeremy Scott. The clothes were featured at Scott's New York, US fashion show, held on February 13, 2013, and resulted in an outcry from Santa Cruz artists, as well as the skateboarding sub-culture. In response, Denike stated to the media:

We had never heard of Jeremy Scott until it was brought to our attention. It's obvious to us, the Phillips family, the fans of Jim Phillips Sr. and Jimbo Phillips, and fans of the brand Santa Cruz Skateboards, as well as many in the global skateboard and skate art community that there is clear and obvious infringement by Mr. Scott. We are discussing this with our legal team to determine our next steps.[7]
