Murat Ceylan (born 2 March 1988) is a Turkish footballer who currently plays as a defensive midfielder for Mersin İdmanyurdu SK in the Süper Lig. Ceylan is also a youth international, having been capped at the U-17, U-19, and U-21 levels.[1]

Life and career

Ceylan was born in Gaziantep, Turkey. He began his career with local club Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor in 2002, eventually moving to cross-town rivals Gaziantepspor in 2004. Ceylan made his debut that same season, against Akçaabat Sebatspor,[2] playing two matches in total. However, he spent the majority of the season in the youth leagues, making 27 appearances.[1] He was loaned half way through the 2005-06 season to another Gaziantep based club, Gaskispor. Ceylan spent the next season on loan as well, accumulating 40 professional matches under his belt. He returned to Gaziantespor at the start of the 2007-08 season, entering the starting lineup in the center of midfield. Ceylan made 27 league appearances, helping Gaziantepspor to an 8th place finish. The team also reached the group stages of the 2007–08 Turkish Cup, finished fourth in the group with five points. The next season, Ceylan made 31 league appearances, and the team once again finished 8th. The team qualified for the group stages of the cup, but did not progress past the stage for the second year in a row. Ceylan made another 31 league appearances during the 2009–10 season, with the team finishing in 14th place. He was linked with Galatasaray at the end of the 2009-10 season, but a move never materialized.[3][4]

International career

Ceylan was first called up to the Turkey U-17 squad in September 2004 for two matches against the Bulgaria U-17s, but was not capped. He earned his first cap for the U-17 squad in a match against Italy on 22 December 2004. Ceylan was not called up for international duty again until 2007, when he was called up to the U-19 squad. He has been capped seven times for the U-19 team, scoring one goal. Ceylan has also been capped for the Turkey national under-21 football team.[1]
