Mundaragi(Kannada: ಮುಂಡರಗಿ ) is a municipal town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Mundargi is close to two district headquarters, being about 36 kilometres (22 mi) from Gadag and around 50 kilometres (31 mi) from Koppal.

The name 'Mundaragi' came from the hill-station Murudagiri, meaning 'Hill of Shiva'. The river Tungabhadra flows about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from Mundargi, and provides water for the town.

Geography

Mundargi is located at 15°13′N 75°54′E / 15.22°N 75.9°E / 15.22; 75.9.^[1] It has total area of 6.64 sq.km. It has an average elevation of 528 metres (1,732 ft). Surrounded by the Kappatagiri range of hills, Mundargi has frequent droughts.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,^[2] Mundargi had a population of 20,318. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mundargi has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 53%. In Mundargi, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transportation

By road, Mundaragi is 37 kilometres (23 mi) south-east of Gadag and 32 kilometres (20 mi) south-west of Koppal. The nearest railway stations are at Gadag Junction and Koppal, and the nearest airport is at Hubli.

Culture

Mundargi is home to the Shri Kanaka Narsimha Temple, an ancient temple of Lord Narsimha built by Rangarao Nadgauda in the early 18th Century. In 1857, a war against the British was fought under the leadership of Sri Mundaragi Bheema rao Nadagouda. A Jatra is held during Holi every year.
