Multimedia University is Malaysia's first private university. It has two campuses: one in Cyberjaya and one in Melaka. The distance between the two campuses is 150 kilometers, via the North South Expressway.

History

In 1994, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia, established the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM) in Taiping, Perak. The first campus was Telekom Malaysia Berhad's former northern region office where the first batch of 42 students were selected to undergo an experimental 2-year telecommunication engineering diploma program. With the academic success of the 1st and 2nd batch, ITTM was awarded the first private university status in Malaysia. With the university status in 1996, ITTM renamed itself to Universiti Telekom. Two campuses were established, one in its original location in Taiping, Perak and the other in Melaka.

The Melaka campus was set up in 1997 and is located in the Ayer Keroh district, the setting up of the campus involved converting an old building belonging to the Telekom Malaysia Berhad's southern region office.

Its Cyberjaya campus opened in Malaysia's first intelligent city, Cyberjaya, on 8 July 1999.

Within the first five years of its founding, the university's student population grew beyond 10,000.

The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.

Recognition and achievement

In 2002, The Multimedia Learning System (MMLS) of MMU won the Asia Pacific MSC IT& Telecommunication Award (APMITTA) and the 2001 Asia Pacific Award for Best of Smart Learning Applications.[4] During 2004, MMU secured four awards from the Ministry of Education, namely, the Highest Enrolment of Local Students, Excellence in R&D, the Highest Number of Courses Accredited, Special Award in Recognition of MMU's Overall Achievement.[5]

In film and video, the Westport Television Commercial Project by MMU students won the Silver Screen Awards at the International Film and Video Awards held in the US. Locally, film and animation students from MMU also won several awards such as the Astro Next-gen Contenpreneur Awards in 2008 and 2009, especially in the field of visual effects.[6]

In engineering education, the AFEO Board conferred upon MMU the AFEO Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award 2007 for its achievements.[7]

In 2009, MMU was ranked at 171 by THES-QS in the Asian University Rankings.[8] It is the first private university in Malaysia to achieve such a feat.

MMU was rated tier 5 (Excellent) in the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education SETARA Rating in 2010 and 2011. This is the highest rating achieved by all institutions. Other universities that achieved tier 5 rating include Monash University (Sunway campus), Nottingham University (Malaysia campus), and University Malaya.

Based on the SCIMAGO Institutions ranking 2010, MMU was ranked 368 in Asia, and No. 6 in Malaysia (No. 1 Private University).

The Webometric ranking 2010 similarly ranked MMU as the No. 1 private university in Malaysia, and is ranked at 172 in Asia.

MMU achieved a 191-200 ranking in the Top 200 Asian University Rankings in 2012.[9]

Cyberjaya campus opened in Malaysia's first intelligent city of Cyberjaya, on 8 July 1999. This campus was the brainchild of the country's fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as a center of learning and research for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), a 750 km² area designated as the country's high-tech research and industrial area. The relationship between the campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationship Stanford University shares with the Silicon Valley. Later, he requested the management to change the name of Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University. Cyberjaya campus has different intelligent features such as multimedia learning facilities, intelligent building systems, electronic governance, a digital library, and an integrated campus management system.[10] The campus also has different The campus faculties such as, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Centre for Foundation Studies and Extension Education, and the Institute for Postgraduate Studies.[11]

Melaka Campus

The campus is nestled in Bukit Beruang (lit: Bear Hill).

The Faculty of Business is located at the campus, with over 3800 students enrolled in its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which include the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Banking & Finance, International Business, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship; Bachelor of Business and Knowledge Management (Hons); Bachelor of Accounting (Hons); Master of Philosophy (Management) and Doctor of Philosophy (Management).

Among the research strengths of the Faculty of Business are knowledge management, sustainability, electronic services, finance and banking, and marketing and entrepreneurship.

The Faculty of Law is a newly established faculy in 2013. Previously it existed as the law department under the Faculty of Busienss and Law. The Faculty of Law currently offers the Bachelor of Law (Hons) (LLB) and the Foundation in Law programmes. Its Bachelor of Law (Hons) programme is the only CLP-exempted law degree from a private institution in Malaysia.

Iskandar Campus

The Faculty of Creative Multimedia at Multimedia University, in collaboration with the University of Southern California, USA, School of Cinematic Arts, will launch a Bachelor of Cinematic Arts Degree to be offered in the Iskandar MMU campus. The partnership with USC to offer the Cinematic Arts Programme will enable the creation of an undergraduate degree which will be offered at the new MMU Campus in Iskandar EduCity, Johor Bahru Malaysia.

Students

As of February 2009 the university had 19,869 students enrolled in 110 courses, including undergraduate and graduate students. Approximately 19% of these are international students from 80 countries.

University students consistently score top placements in national business plan competitions. There are over 100 campus student groups.

All student bodies are registered with the Student Affairs Division (STAD). Each student body is allocated a budget to enable them to run their activities, however students are encouraged to seek alternative means of funding their activities or functions. The student bodies are grouped as follows:

In 2002, the dean of the Faculty of Engineering (Engr. Professor Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik) under the patronage of the Chancellor YABhg (Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohammad Ali) founded the Multimedia University Engineering Society Overseas Research Programme (MESCORP). MESCORP is an undergraduate-based research work which involves a field study initiated by the university's engineering students.

Notable international events that have been organized by the students in MMU include the World Universities Debating Championship in 2005, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2003, and the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2000.
