Muladi (Bengali: মুলাদি) is an Upazila of Barisal District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh.

Geography

Muladi is located at 22°54′55″N 90°24′54″E / 22.9153°N 90.4150°E / 22.9153; 90.4150 . It has 32515 units of house hold and total area 261.02 km².Gosairhat upazila on the north, Barisal Sadar upazila on the south, Hizla and Mehendiganj upazilas on the east, Kalkini, Gournadi and Babuganj upazilas on the west.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Muladi has a population of 171948. Males constitute 50.49% of the population, and females 49.51%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 80369. Muladi has an average literacy rate of 31.4% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Administrative

Administration Muladi thana was established in 1967 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 7 union parishads, 98 mouzas and 108 villages.

Population 171948; male 50.49%, female 49.51%; Muslim 97.79%, Hindu 2.16% and others 0.05%.

Average literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 31.4%; male 36.5% and female 26.2%. Educational institutions: college 5, high school 30, junior school 5, government primary school 77, non-government primary school 50, madrasa 17, kindergarten 1. Noted educational institutions: Bheduriachar Government Primary School (1892), Tayak Tomchar Government Primary School (1845).

Religious institutions Mosque 440, temple 18, church 1, noted of which are Muladi Jami Mosque, Kazirchar Kazibari Jami Mosque, Muladi Temple.

Cultural organisations Club 18, public library 1, cinema hall 1, theatre group 2, playground 10.

Main occupations Agriculture 51.17%, agricultural labourer 20.67%, wage labourer 3.18%, commerce 7.52%, service 7.13%, fishing 2.5% and others 7.83%.

Land use Cultivable land 26159.45 hectares, fallow land 237.56 hectares; single crop 42%, double crop 50% and treble crop land 8%. Cultivable land under irrigation 74%.

Land control Among the peasants, 29% are landless, 7.09% marginal, 32.82% small, 27% intermediate and 4.09% rich; cultivable land per head 0.14 hectare.

Value of land Market value of land of the first grade is approximately 5000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, wheat, sweet potato, pulse, brinjal, betel leaf.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Jute, tobacco, mustard seed, ground nut, garlic, sugarcane, arahar, china, kaun.

Main fruits Mango, Jack fruit, banana, black berry, coconut, litchi, palm, betel nut, amra.

Fisheries, dairies and poultry Poultry 27, fishery 50, dairy 7.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 22 km, semi pucca 15 km and mud road 250 km; waterways 65 nautical mile.

Traditional transport Palanquin, dulki, pansi boat. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.

Manufactures Flour mill 1, rice mill 25, ice factory 5, saw mill 40, pulse mill 2 and chira mill 1.

Cottage industries Weaving 7, Bamboo work 62, goldsmith 5, potteries 93, wood work 212, tailoring 182, welding 16.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 34, fairs 5, most noted of which are Muladi Bandar Hat, Khaser Hat, Kazirchar Adam Ali Fakir Mela, Munshi Bari Mela.

Main exports Paddy, pulse, betel leaf, betel nut and amra.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, Homeland, Meghna, asa, proshika, RDO, Disha.
